Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the super heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 7 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Valeriy Grushevky! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
12 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Werner Meier! The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Aleksei Zolotukhin and Viktor Lagutenko.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Meier changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Grushevky tries to avoid it but Meier manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Grushevky to the ground. Grushevky escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. The fighters circle momentarily. Grushevky darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
It looks like Werner Meier has been cut. Good shot there by Grushevky. Grushevky will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Meier takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Meier dodges the punch combination from Grushevky.
It seemed like Meier was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Grushevky thuds a left hand into Meier's body. Grushevky scores with a punch to the head. Grushevky keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
That's one minute gone in the round. Grushevky stuffs the takedown attempt from Meier. Meier gets slowly back to his feet. Valeriy Grushevky has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Werner Meier. Grushevky scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one. Meier drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles. Grushevky catches Meier napping and connects with a big right hand that sends Meier to the canvas!
Meier is rocked! This has been an exciting period of action! Grushevky is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Meier keeping moving, preventing Grushevky from controlling successfully. Grushevky stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Meier swivels though and keeps the full guard. Meier had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Grushevky defends it easily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Meier looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Meier working a defensive guard but Grushevky manages to pass into side control anyway.
Meier manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu! Meier is working for a kimura but Grushevky is defending it quite comfortably.
Meier is looking for a kimura but Grushevky is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Meier to get the leverage. Meier is working for a submission of some sort.
Grushevky is looking for a sweep. Meier is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Grushevky is looking to control Meier's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Grushevky avoid being mounted? Grushevky wants to get back to full guard. Meier is trying to work for a kimura but Grushevky is defending well.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Grushevky tries to get to full guard but Meier has control of the leg. Grushevky is working hard here to advance position. Grushevky is refusing to be controlled, as Meier sits in half guard. Grushevky gets full guard. Meier stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Grushevky swivels though and keeps the full guard. Grushevky working for a triangle but Meier defends it easily.

Valeriy Grushevky dominated that round. The cut man is working on Werner Meier's cut. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Grushevky lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Meier circles away quickly and effectively. Grushevky getting the better of the striking in that exchange. Meier slips a jab and a cross from Grushevky.
Valeriy Grushevky is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Grushevky misses with a series of wild punches.
Meier feints the counter takedown. Valeriy Grushevky seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Grushevky uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Meier has time to react. Grushevky lands a really nice looking cross but Meier seems unphased.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. A shot to the liver by Grushevky. Beautiful body shot. Meier shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Grushevky's guard. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Grushevky keeping moving, preventing Meier from controlling successfully. Grushevky had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Meier defends it easily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Meier decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Grushevky, up you get! Grushevky lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Meier backs up against the cage.
Grushevky lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Meier at a distance.
Grushevky missing with a left hand there. Meier was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Grushevky stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush. Grushevky punishes Meier's body with a nice straight punch. Grushevky bobbing and weaving well here. And he's unloaded with a massive right hand that drops Meier! He dives into his guard looking to finish!
Meier is still in real trouble! Can Grushevky finish him? The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Grushevky trying to control but Meier is working from the bottom. Both fighters have adopted an aggressive gameplan on the ground! Grushevky forces his way into half guard. Meier seems to have recovered his senses.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Grushevky prevents Meier from improving his position. Grushevky is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Grushevky is trying to work for a kimura but Meier is defending well.
Grushevky is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Meier defends it well. Grushevky is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount! Meier is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Grushevky looking to control but Meier is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Meier is desperately trying to improve his position but Grushevky has a good base and remains in mount. Grushevky working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet. Grushevky tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Grushevky is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Meier has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Meier tries to reverse the position but Grushevky maintains control. Grushevky looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Meier wants to control but Grushevky is having none of it. Grushevky wants to control but instead Meier manages to regain half guard. Meier is trying to get back to full guard. Grushevky is working for a submission of some sort.
Meier looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Valeriy Grushevky overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Meier is not content to let Grushevky control the position. Meier looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Grushevky thuds a left hand into Meier's body. A jab-cross combination lands for Grushevky and sends Meier crashing to the mat! Grushevky follows him down to the mat - Meier regains half guard but he's not out of trouble yet! Meier is refusing to be controlled, as Grushevky sits in half guard. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Grushevky wants to take a breather but Meier is having none of it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Meier wants to get back to full guard. Grushevky trying to pass the guard but Meier defending well. Meier is staying active underneath Grushevky, who seems content to just control the action from this position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Meier actively working from the bottom here. Meier looking for submissions off his back. Grushevky is looking for a kimura but Meier is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Grushevky to get the leverage. Grushevky controlling the action here. Meier is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Grushevky pulls his head out easily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Meier is trying to stand.
Grushevky is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Meier can do to turn this around? Grushevky seems to be looking for submissions.
Grushevky is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Meier defends it well. Meier is not content to let Grushevky control the position. Grushevky looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Grushevky is trying to control the action in half guard but Meier is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. Meier flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Meier showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Grushevky.
Grushevky paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button. Meier takes a shot right to the bread basket. Donk. Grushevky catches Meier right on the button with a cross. Grushevky scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent. Meier is trying hard to land a takedown here. Grushevky sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Meier takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Grushevky misses with a series of wild punches.

That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Meier tries to lock up and control but Grushevky gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Grushevky looking to control and managing it successfully. Meier defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Grushevky. Grushevky with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Meier slips a leg in and gets back to half guard. Meier tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land. Grushevky is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Meier sees it coming and defends easily. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Valeriy Grushevky clearly takes that round. The cut man is working on Werner Meier's cut. That's time! Grushevky's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Meier takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Meier is trying hard to land a takedown here. Grushevky sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Grushevky lets his hands go wild with a nice combination. Left! Right! Uppercut! Spinning backfist! Meier goes down and covers up as Grushevky starts wailing on him! The ref watches the action closely before stepping in and putting a stop to the fight!
