PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Fernando Alves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ray Lewis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Alves might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Rob Zombie - Scum of the earth . Lewis has chosen Nelly - Hot In Herre as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 24 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Fernando Alves!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ray Lewis!
The judges for this bout are , Jack Bonds and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lewis jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Alves throws a big shot that misses.
Lewis throws a looping overhand right but Alves ducks down to avoid it.
Lewis defending well as Alves loads up on a big left hand.
Alves throws a head kick that looked like it stung.


It looks like Ray Lewis has been cut.
Lewis keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Alves tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Lewis was well out of range. Poor timing from Alves.
Lewis doesn't fully commit to the body shot counter.
Good work by Alves as he checks the leg kick.
A big right from Lewis misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Alves throws a right and a left that Lewis avoids nicely.
It seemed like Lewis was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

Alves throws a mid kick that lands with a slap.

Lewis scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Lewis displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Alves.
Alves moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Lewis on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Alves. Alves obviously looking to wear him down.
Lewis misses with a jab, cross combination.
Lewis throws out a loose jab but Alves uses good head movement to avoid it.
It looked like Alves was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Lewis clobbers Alves with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Alves connects with a leg kick. Lewis looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
Alves misses the shot to the body.
An inside leg kick from Alves misses.
Lewis takes a head kick and keeps coming.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Alves throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Alves darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Alves throws a sloppy head kick and Lewis moves out of range easily.
Lewis bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Alves's head.
Alves tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Alves walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Lewis checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
Lewis stalks Alves and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Alves's face. Alves staggers backwards, shaken.
Lewis throws a front kick aimed at Alves's knee but Alves avoids it well.
Alves swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Alves displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Lewis throws out the jab.
Lewis lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Alves looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Alves has a takedown stuffed.
Lewis throws out a counter right but Alves avoids it with no problem.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Lewis checks a low kick from Alves.
Alves throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
Lewis lands a nice leg kick that just misses Alves's sensitive parts.
Lewis clobbers Alves with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Lewis dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Lewis throws a nice inside leg kick.
Alves tries to close the distance and clinch up but Lewis swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Alves misses with a takedown attempt - Lewis sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Fernando Alves. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Alves moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Lewis lands a really nice looking cross but Alves seems unphased.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Lewis lands with a right hand.
Alves throws a front kick aimed at Lewis's knee but Lewis avoids it well.
Lewis gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Lewis lands with a nice body punch.
Lewis throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Alves appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Lewis throws a lazy right hand but Alves sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Alves darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Alves throws a leg kick but Lewis sees it coming and moves out of range.
Alves steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Lewis.
Lewis will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Alves just misses with a punch to the body.
Alves bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Lewis's head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Alves's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Alves moves away from the strike by Lewis.
Alves went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Alves scores with a jab to the head.
Alves displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Lewis throws out the jab.
Lewis misses with an uppercut.
Lewis lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Alves tries to score with a low kick but Lewis moves his leg out of the way.
Alves throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Lewis sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Lewis thows a left - swing and a miss!

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lewis throws a right and a left that Alves avoids nicely.
Ray Lewis seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Alves was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Lewis slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Lewis slips a jab and a cross from Alves.

Alves keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Alves lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Lewis circles away quickly and effectively.
Lewis tests Alves's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Lewis throws a shot from downtown. Alves moves away and avoids it.
Lewis misses with a hook.
Lewis swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Alves looks to land a right hand but Lewis moved out of range.
Lewis connects with a right hand. Alves shakes it off.
Lewis waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Alves.
Lewis throws a leg kick but Alves sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Alves throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Lewis.
Lewis misses with a head kick.

Lewis swings for the body but Alves moves out of range.
A clash of legs there as Lewis blocks the low kick.
Lewis tries to clinch up.
Nice shot by Alves.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Good work by Lewis as he checks the leg kick.
Lewis looks like he wants to counter punch here.
Lewis's jab looks to have found its range, popping Alves under the eye.
Lewis throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Alves stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Lewis swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Alves half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
This entire fight has taken place on the feet so far and you wonder whether Alves might be better served trying to take this one to the ground because he's losing the standup battle so far.
That kick from Alves tenderised Lewis's leg. Lewis is trying to keep his angry face on.

Ray Lewis is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Alves is looking to slow Lewis down with leg kicks.

Lewis pulls out of a head kick attempt.
A chopping leg kick lands by Alves.
Alves is looking to score with low kicks.
Lewis looks like he wants to counter punch here.
Lewis tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Alves was well out of range. Poor timing from Lewis.

Alves shoots in looking for a takedown but Lewis manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Alves's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Alves takes a kick to the side of the head.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Lewis misses with a low kick as Alves jumps back.
Lewis lands a nice shot that snaps Alves's head back.
Lewis has worked on his takedown defense in the runup to this fight and it is paying off so far.
Alves looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Lewis jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Lewis walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Lewis throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Ray Lewis showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Lewis looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Lewis throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Alves's head.
Alves defending well as Lewis loads up on a big left hand.
Lewis connects with a good right hand that stumbles Alves. Alves circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Alves thuds his right hand into Lewis's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Lewis lands with a cross.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Alves looks to land a left hand but Lewis moved out of range nicely.
Lewis misses with a body kick.

Alves is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Lewis's half guard.

Lewis has hold of Alves's hands but Alves slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Lewis manages to get to full guard.

Hammerfist, elbow! yells Alves's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Alves working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Lewis has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Alves is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.

Lewis escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Alves throws a jab when Lewis was well out of range.
Alves loads up on a big right hand but Lewis slips the punch.

Alves gets off balance looking for a body kick
enabling Lewis to counter with a crisp jab.
Lewis is looking to chop away at Alves's legs.

Alves shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Alves was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Alves sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Lewis is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Lewis wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Fernando Alves has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Alves wants to lay and pray for a moment but Lewis keeps working.
Alves tries to score with some ground and pound. Lewis controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
The ground and pound from Alves seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Lewis tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Lewis manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Lewis is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Alves's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Alves's back!
I really don't envy Alves right now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Alves avoids the strikes from Lewis.

Lewis throws a big right hand but he misses and hits the mat. Ouch.
Lewis lands with a hammerfist to the side of Alves's head.
Alves trying to control but not successfully.
Alves is really stuck here.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Alves is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Lewis gets his way!
A lull in the action here.
Ray Lewis is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Lewis has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Lewis punches the canvas rather than the man.
Alves is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Lewis keeps control of the position easily here as Alves tries to buck him off.
Alves is taking damage to the body and head.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ray Lewis comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Lewis winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
