PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mark Shamrock (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dennis Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shamrock's entrance music is Rockstar. A fine choice. Gracie has chosen Streight Up Menace as his entrance music. Dennis Gracie will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Mark Shamrock!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Dennis Gracie!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Gregory Folan and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Shamrock takes the fight into the clinch.
Gracie avoids the elbow strike from Shamrock, against the cage.
Gracie drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Shamrock jumps guard but Gracie stands there with Shamrock around his waist. Shamrock gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Shamrock gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Gracie.
Gracie is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Shamrock pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Mark Shamrock has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dennis Gracie.

Shamrock drags the fight down to the ground.
Shamrock keeping full guard, as Gracie tries to pass.
Gracie scoring with punches to the head and body.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gracie lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Shamrock looking for a sweep. Not yet Shamrock, not yet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gracie lands a couple of elbows.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gracie wants to control from the top but Shamrock keeps moving.
Gracie postures up.
Shamrock is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Shamrock had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Gracie is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Shamrock Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Gracie's back instead.
Gracie manages to reverse the position and now he's in Shamrock's guard. Nice work there by Gracie.

Shamrock looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Gracie looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Gracie is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Shamrock has momentary wrist control but Gracie slips an elbow through the middle.
Shamrock might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gracie passes Shamrock's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Gracie is taking a breather. Shamrock says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Gracie missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dennis Gracie dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Gracie shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Shamrock but Shamrock pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Gracie shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Shamrock as he jumps to the side.
Nice takedown defense from Shamrock. No joy for Gracie on that attempt.
Mark Shamrock has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dennis Gracie.
Shamrock throws a leg kick which misses Gracie's front leg but catches the back leg as Gracie tries to avoid it.
Shamrock throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Gracie.
Gracie tries to clinch but Shamrock moves away

and Shamrock counters with a takedown into side control.
Gracie is not content to let Shamrock control the position.
Shamrock has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Gracie!
Gracie is breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gracie is in a horrible position here. Shamrock smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Shamrock lands a nice shot to the head.
Gracie tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Gracie manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Gracie makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Gracie.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Shamrock trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Gracie trying to control the position.
Gracie wants to sweep but no luck.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gracie seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Gracie looking to control.
Gracie is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Gracie lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Gracie wants to control but Shamrock is keeping him busy.
Gracie is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Shamrock is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Gracie scores with a couple of nice shots.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mark Shamrock dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Gracie dodges the punch combination from Shamrock.
Gracie fails with the takedown
and Shamrock counters with an outside leg kick.

and Shamrock counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Shamrock.
Shamrock loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Shamrock passes Gracie's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Shamrock has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Shamrock working the ground and pound effectively.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gracie can't escape the position.
Gracie tries to hold on but Shamrock pushes him away.
Gracie throwing hammer fists to the chest of Shamrock. What's that going to do exactly?
Gracie tries to lock up and control but Shamrock gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Shamrock has control of Gracie's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Gracie regains control of the situation pretty easily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Gracie sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.

Shamrock is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gracie has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Shamrock is working away from the top position though.

Gracie kicks off Shamrock and gets to his feet.

Gracie feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Gracie wants to control from the top but Shamrock keeps moving.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gracie trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Gracie passes Shamrock's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Well, if Gracie is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Gracie winds up and cracks Shamrock with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Mark Shamrock.
I think Shamrock has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
