Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ephraim Baraka!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
10 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Hai Shang!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Chris Saunders and Ryoma Takatsuka.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Baraka throws a right and a left that both miss.
Shang clobbers Baraka with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Baraka has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Shang.
Shang thuds his shin into the meat of Baraka's side.
Baraka shoots in for a takedown but Shang shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Baraka doesn't manage to clinch there - Shang circles away.
Shang stuffs the takedown attempt from Baraka. Baraka gets slowly back to his feet.
Baraka works the jab nicely.
Shang cracks Baraka with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Shang throws a right and a left that Baraka avoids nicely.
Baraka appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
An inside leg kick lands from Shang.
Shang doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Shang leaves Baraka with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Shang feints a counter leg kick.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ephraim Baraka. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Shang displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Baraka throws out the jab.
Baraka shoots in but no luck this time.
That's one minute gone in the round.
Baraka shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
A momentary lapse in concentration from Baraka enables Shang to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Baraka manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Shang told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.
Shang is looking to work some ground and pound but Baraka has wrist control.
Baraka is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Shang has his hands clasped together but Baraka extends and breaks Shang's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Baraka.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:34 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Ephraim Baraka!
Our winner, Ephraim Baraka, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
