Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Li (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rez Cortez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cortez has chosen Can We Still Be Friends as his entrance music. John Li has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, John Li!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 21 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Rez Cortez!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Ryoma Takatsuka and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Li closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Li lands in his opponent's guard.
Cortez can't keep his opponent in guard - Li advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Cortez gets full guard.
Cortez is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Li trying to control but Cortez is working from the bottom.
Cortez manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Li manages to get himself to full guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Li is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Li escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Cortez gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Cortez got a little sloppy there for a moment and Li has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Cortez has managed to get both his arms back between Li's legs - danger averted.

Li working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Cortez doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Cortez manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Li is trying to control the position but Cortez postures up.
Cortez must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Cortez passes Li's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Cortez is looking to take a break and control but Li is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Li is positioning himself well to prevent Cortez advancing to mount.
Cortez is trying to control the action in half guard but Li is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Cortez really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Li. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Li is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Li closes the distance and clinches up with Cortez, looking for a takedown. Li pushes Cortez against the cage but Cortez circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

No joy there for Cortez, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Li takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.

Li attempts a counter takedown but Cortez avoids it well and moves away.

Cortez looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Li will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Li winds up and cracks Cortez with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Cortez is desperately trying to improve his position but Li has a good base and remains in mount.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Li here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
Li postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Cortez looks a forlorn figure.
Cortez tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Li postures up and throws a big right hand. BOOM! Right on the button! Cortez is out cold - huge knockout for Li!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:49 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). John Li!
An out of breath John Li thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
