Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Nick Roberts! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Georges Hughes! The judges for this bout are Peter Branson, Winston Alpacca and Sandra Marshall.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hughes gets caught napping as Roberts dives in and scores a takedown. Hughes manages to retain guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Hughes avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Roberts being controlled here momentarily. Hughes trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from! Hughes is adopting a defensive guard. Hughes is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Hughes is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully. Hughes really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Roberts. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Hughes pulls Roberts in close to his closed guard and prevents Roberts from doing any damage or advancing position. Roberts trying to control the position from guard on top but Hughes is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. That's one minute gone in the round. Roberts stays in close to Hughes's body and controls the position. The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Hughes doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Hughes shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Hughes throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Hughes winds up and cracks Roberts with a swinging punch to the side of the head. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Hughes connects with a nice short shot to Roberts's temple. Roberts regains full guard. Nicely done. Hughes pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Roberts is keeping the position for now. Roberts lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard. Roberts throws a big right hand that misses. Hughes is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Roberts defends well. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Hughes holds on and takes a little breather. Roberts has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Hughes not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Roberts postures up in Hughes's guard and throws a big left but Hughes blocks it. Hughes keeping moving, preventing Roberts from controlling successfully. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Roberts preventing the sweep. The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet. Hughes throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Roberts attempts a counter takedown but Hughes avoids it well and moves away. Hughes shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Roberts regains full guard. Nicely done. Roberts working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Hughes doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Roberts is tightening it up a little... Hughes has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Hughes reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Hughes taps out! Nice BJJ there by Roberts!
