PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Jesse Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jos Rodri (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jesse Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jos Rodri!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Chris Downing and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Jones feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Rodri had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Jones defends it easily.
Jones throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Rodri works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Jones slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Jones throwing strikes from guard but Rodri blocks nicely.
Jones not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Jones seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Rodri for as long as he can get away with.
Jones wants to control from the top but Rodri keeps moving.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Rodri is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Jones blocks a head kick by Rodri.
Jos Rodri seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Rodri fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Jones throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Rodri's waist but Rodri gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Jones off to one side.
Rodri tries for a takedown but Jones sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Jones looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Rodri fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Rodri gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Jones to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Jones seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Rodri should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Jones is looking to work some ground and pound but Rodri has wrist control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Jones slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Rodri trying to keep a closed guard but Jones is proving a slippery customer.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rodri pulls Jones in close to prevent any damage.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Jones controlling from the top position.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Rodri shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Jones sprawls well. Jones wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Rodri gets slowly back to his feet.
Jones is looking for a counter combo.
Jesse Jones has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jos Rodri.
Rodri shoots and misses
and Jones counters with a one-two to the body.
Jones shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Rodri pinned against the cage. Rodri gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Rodri fails with an attempt to clinch.
Rodri tries to clinch but Jones is having none of it.
Rodri misses with a takedown attempt - Jones sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Jones shoots in but Rodri avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Jones throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Rodri tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Jones is in Rodri's guard.

Jones has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Jones controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Jones is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Rodri is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Rodri has escaped and now he's on top!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Jones controls Rodri momentarily but Rodri frees himself.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Jones's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Jones leaves Rodri with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Rodri fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Jones swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Rodri displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Jones.
Jones is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Rodri can do to turn this around?
Rodri tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Jones defends well and Rodri ends up having to push Jones into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Jones closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Rodri did well to prevent Jones getting side control.
Jones seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Jones has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jones looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Rodri with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Jones is looking to take a break and control but Rodri is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Rodri wants to control but Jones is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Jesse Jones overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Jones lands a nice short elbow.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Jones will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!



Jones shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Rodri is trying to defend but Jones finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Jones is keen to just control but Rodri is a slippery customer.
Jones looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Jones throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Rodri is looking for a sweep. Jones is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Jones's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Jones is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Jones connects with a nice short shot to Rodri's temple.
Rodri is trying to maintain the position but Jones is very close to passing his half guard.
Jones is looking to stall here but Rodri recovers full guard.
Jones slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Well Jones has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
