Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between JJ Lakes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Valentin Shovkovskyj (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). JJ Lakes had a look across the cage there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, JJ Lakes! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 7 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Valentin Shovkovskyj! The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Frank Antenori and .
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Lakes shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Shovkovskyj counters with a nice body shot. Lakes shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Shovkovskyj manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Shovkovskyj can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Lakes controls the pace. Lakes is looking to stand up but Shovkovskyj won't let him. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Lakes with a flurry of punches that miss. Lakes being controlled here momentarily. Lakes wants to control from the top but Shovkovskyj keeps moving.
That's one minute gone in the round. Lakes is pushing down on Shovkovskyj's leg trying to pass to half guard. Shovkovskyj is fighting to maintain full guard but Lakes has managed to sneak the leg through. Lakes is working for a submission of some sort.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Lakes is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Shovkovskyj keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Lakes fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Shovkovskyj avoids it really well and circles away. Lakes defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Shovkovskyj. Shovkovskyj closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Lakes did well to prevent Shovkovskyj getting side control. Lakes kicks off Shovkovskyj and gets to his feet.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Lakes shoots in but doesn't get the takedown so Shovkovskyj counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for JJ Lakes. That's going to take a lot out of him. Lakes is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Shovkovskyj defends well. Shovkovskyj trying to control the position from guard on top but Lakes is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Lakes wants to get back to his feet but Shovkovskyj is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Shovkovskyj lands a couple of elbows. Shovkovskyj stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Lakes swivels though and keeps the full guard. We've been hearing good reports from Lakes's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Shovkovskyj must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Shovkovskyj connects with a couple of short punches. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Shovkovskyj drops back looking for a leg! Lakes is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Lakes manages to kick Shovkovskyj off! That was a close round but I would say that JJ Lakes will probably get the nod. That's time! Back to the action!
Lakes throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Shovkovskyj was covering up waiting for the punch and Lakes finishes the takedown easily into guard. Shovkovskyj is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Lakes dives into side control.
Lakes throws an elbow but Shovkovskyj slips to the side and avoids it well. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Shovkovskyj is trying to control Lakes's posture but Lakes avoids it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Shovkovskyj tries to improve position but can't. Lakes working away. Shovkovskyj tries to buck Lakes off but Lakes is having none of it. Lakes wants to control but Shovkovskyj is keeping him busy. Lakes is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Shovkovskyj is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Lakes is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Shovkovskyj knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Lakes tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily. Lakes misses with the ground and pound.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Lakes thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Lakes working away.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Shovkovskyj drives through with a takedown into guard. Lakes trying to control the position.
Shovkovskyj postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Shovkovskyj landing with the ground and pound. JJ Lakes overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Shovkovskyj's corner. There ya go! There ya go! Shovkovskyj working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. Lakes pushes Shovkovskyj off and gets back to his feet.
Lakes tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Lakes darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Lakes seems to be looking for submissions.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Lakes looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
JJ Lakes dominated that second round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!
Lakes goes for a double leg but Shovkovskyj avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Shovkovskyj continues to drive forward. Shovkovskyj drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Lakes defends it well. Shovkovskyj shoots for a double leg takedown but Lakes sprawls well. He's pushed Shovkovskyj's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Lakes appears to be looking for a big counter. Lakes throws a leg kick that is checked and Shovkovskyj counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Shovkovskyj thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Lakes's head. Shovkovskyj is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Shovkovskyj is nestled in close to Lakes, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Lakes flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

Shovkovskyj wants to stand but Lakes has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now. Shovkovskyj thows a huge punch but Lakes dodges it nicely.

Valentin Shovkovskyj has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Shovkovskyj is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Lakes doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Shovkovskyj.
And that's the end of the fight! Valentin Shovkovskyj comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. I think Lakes has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
