Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
9 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Johnny Llavicrep! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
9 - 12 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, John Cook! The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Cook gets in close and instigates a clinch. Cook is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though. Llavicrep is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Cook can't fight it off and eventually Llavicrep manages to take the fight to the floor. Cook looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard. Llavicrep is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Llavicrep stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cook swivels though and keeps the full guard. Llavicrep stays in close to Cook's body and controls the position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Cook has his foot on Llavicrep's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Llavicrep works his way back into a safe position though. Llavicrep chips away with some ground and pound. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Cook is on top in guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cook wants to control from the top but Llavicrep keeps moving. Cook makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Llavicrep is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Cook is looking to work some ground and pound but Llavicrep has wrist control. Cook passes Llavicrep's left leg - he's now in half guard. Llavicrep controlling the position for now. Cook wants to lay and pray for a moment but Llavicrep keeps working. Llavicrep wants to improve his position but Cook is controlling well.
Llavicrep tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Llavicrep gets back to full guard.
Cook throwing strikes but missing. Cook won't allow Llavicrep to sweep him here. Llavicrep avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Cook is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Cook postures up and lands a big shot to Llavicrep's brow. Cook is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Llavicrep is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched. Llavicrep pulls guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Cook gets to his feet - Llavicrep follows without any prompting. Llavicrep closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. We've been hearing that Llavicrep has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish. Cook is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Cook told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet. Llavicrep content to control rather than advance. Llavicrep seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Cook for as long as he can get away with.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Cook is looking for a sweep. Llavicrep is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Cook is not content to let Llavicrep control the position. Cook taking some punishment here, with Llavicrep in his half guard. Llavicrep lands a massive shot from half guard that has rocked Cook! More strikes land and this one is all over! Llavicrep jumps to his feet and is applauded loudly by the crowd!
