PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Micheal Marsh (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Atanasio Girardot (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Atanasio Girardot will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Micheal Marsh!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Atanasio Girardot!
The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Felipe Paraventi and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Girardot stuffs the takedown attempt from Marsh. Marsh gets slowly back to his feet.
And Girardot tries to counter it with a takedown but Marsh pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Girardot tries to close the distance and clinch up but Marsh swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Girardot looks for a takedown but Marsh sprawls well.
Girardot throws a head kick but Marsh moves out of range.
Nice takedown defense from Girardot. No joy for Marsh on that attempt.
Girardot cracks the inside of Marsh's front leg.
Girardot shoots in but no luck this time.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Girardot instigates a clinch.

Marsh escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Marsh feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Marsh loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Marsh with a flurry of punches that miss.
Marsh postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Girardot avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Marsh prevents Girardot from getting back to his feet.

Marsh will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Marsh with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Girardot manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.

A frustrated look appears on Marsh's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Marsh is trying to break the clinch but Girardot is controlling him.
Marsh misses with a hook to the ribs.
Girardot is working for takedown but Marsh is calmly controlling the position for now.
Micheal Marsh has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Atanasio Girardot.
Girardot tries for a takedown. No joy.
Marsh wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Marsh wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Marsh gets to his feet. Girardot looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Marsh shoots in but Girardot avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Marsh drives through with a takedown into guard.
Marsh works over Girardot with some ground and pound from guard.
Marsh throwing strikes but missing.
Girardot is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Marsh throws a big right hand that misses.
Marsh stands up over Girardot, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Marsh wants to get up but he can't break Girardot's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Girardot lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Marsh pulls Girardot in to control the position.
Marsh avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Marsh wants to stand but Girardot is controlling the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Marsh's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Girardot misses with a takedown
and Marsh counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Marsh shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Girardot pinned against the cage. Girardot gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Marsh shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Marsh is thwarting Girardot's attempts to control the position.
Girardot is breathing heavily.

Girardot has hold of Marsh's hands but Marsh slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Marsh is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Girardot can do to turn this around?
Marsh lands with a punch from half guard.
Girardot felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Girardot is looking to control Marsh's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Girardot avoid being mounted?
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Marsh is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Girardot sees it coming and defends easily.

Marsh is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Girardot defends it well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Marsh is figuring out what he wants to do next.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Marsh throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Girardot trying to control here.

Marsh is working for a submission of some sort.
Marsh lands strikes from half guard.
Marsh really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Marsh seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Marsh misses with a head shot. Girardot uses the momentum to regain guard.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Marsh's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Marsh has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Marsh is in close to Girardot's body, working some short punches and elbows.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Marsh decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Girardot manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Marsh keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.

Marsh can't break the clinch.
Marsh has had enough of the clinch but Girardot keeps him there for the moment.

Marsh breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Girardot shoots in but Marsh avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Marsh looks to land a combination but Girardot avoids it well.
Girardot fails with a takedown attempt.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Marsh tries for a takedown but Girardot sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
And Girardot tries to counter it with a takedown but Marsh pushes his down on his head and steps out.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Micheal Marsh. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Marsh takes a jab right on the kisser.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Girardot's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Marsh connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Girardot scrambles back to his feet.

Girardot throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Marsh was covering up waiting for the punch and Girardot finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Micheal Marsh overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Marsh pulls Girardot in close to prevent any damage.

Marsh has his feet on Girardot's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

Marsh throws a big elbow that misses.
Marsh stops Girardot from standing up.
Girardot controls Marsh momentarily but Marsh frees himself.

Marsh postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Marsh lands a couple of digs.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Marsh shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Girardot pinned against the cage. Girardot gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Girardot now looks to counter with a shot at the body.

Girardot throws a right and a left that Marsh avoids nicely.
Marsh lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Marsh looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Atanasio Girardot seems to be getting the better of the standup.

and Marsh counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Marsh wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Girardot escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Marsh changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Girardot tries to avoid it but Marsh manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Girardot to the ground. Girardot escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Marsh avoids the head kick by Girardot.
Marsh shoots in but no luck this time.
Marsh closes the distance and clinches up with Girardot, looking for a takedown. Marsh pushes Girardot against the cage but Girardot circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Girardot tries to clinch but Marsh is having none of it.

and Girardot counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

Marsh changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Girardot looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Atanasio Girardot has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Micheal Marsh is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Micheal Marsh.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Marsh, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
