Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between John Equinox (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Masakazu Aoki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Aoki has chosen Sandstorm by Darude as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
61 - 31 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Equinox! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
45 - 30 - 2, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Masakazu Aoki! The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Mauricio Rocha and Daniel Cesar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Aoki with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Equinox throws out a loose jab but Aoki uses good head movement to avoid it. Aoki throws out a counter right but Equinox avoids it with no problem. Equinox misses with a telegraphed body shot
and Aoki counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena. Aoki misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Equinox.

It looks like Masakazu Aoki has been cut. Aoki lands a glancing blow to the side of Equinox's head. Aoki throws a low kick but it's checked well by Equinox. Aoki misses with an uppercut
and Equinox counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. Equinox staying out of range there. Equinox leaves Aoki with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Aoki takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.

Aoki throws a leg kick but Equinox moved away. It looked like Equinox was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Aoki.
That's one minute gone in the round. Equinox moves out of range of the strikes. Equinox seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance. Aoki circles away from the clinch attempt.
Equinox with a jab. Aoki has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout. Aoki tries to clinch up. Equinox slips under a jab. Aoki tries to clinch there but Equinox circles away.

Equinox fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Aoki, pushing him back against the cage. Equinox has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Aoki blocks a punch to the side of the head.

We're back to striking at a distance. John Equinox has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Masakazu Aoki. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Equinox stuffs the takedown attempt from Aoki. Aoki gets slowly back to his feet. Equinox tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Aoki manages to circle out of the way. Aoki looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. John Equinox is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Aoki throws the left hand but Equinox avoids the punch easily. Masakazu Aoki seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Equinox misses with a hook. Aoki feints a counter leg kick. The fighters circling - Aoki throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Equinox moves out of range of the leg kick from Aoki. A big left from Aoki misses. Aoki misses with a straight right. A head kick by Aoki misses and Equinox cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Aoki lands with a straight right. Equinox didn't see that one coming. Aoki dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Aoki rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Equinox counters with a nice uppercut. Aoki uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Equinox has time to react. Equinox has Aoki up against the cage in a clinch.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Aoki is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Equinox is defending well for now. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Equinox stops a takedown attempt from Aoki.
Equinox is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches. Equinox swings wildly with an uppercut but Aoki uses good head movement to avoid it. A head punch on the inside from Equinox fails to land. Equinox dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage. Equinox throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Aokis head. Equinox has a couple of punches blocked by Aoki.

Aoki lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected. Equinox gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Aoki. Aoki tries to clinch but Equinox is having none of it. Aoki throws a body punch but Equinox moves out of range. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that John Equinox will probably get the nod. The cut man is working on Masakazu Aoki's cut. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
A telegraphed right hand from Aoki misses the target. Aoki stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush. Aoki wants to land a leg kick but Equinox is out of range. Equinox has closed the distance and engaged Aoki in a clinch.
Equinox lands a hook to the side of the head. Aoki lands with a right to the head. Aoki blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Equinox throws a punch but it's blocked by Aoki. Equinox lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage. Aoki is pushing Equinox up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word. Equinox gets through Aoki's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Equinox. Equinox blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning. Equinox lands on the inside with an uppercut.

Is there anything that Aoki can do to turn this around? A short right from Equinox. Equinox lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Aoki or not. Equinox swings wildly with an uppercut but Aoki uses good head movement to avoid it. Equinox blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning. Aoki has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Equinox regains guard immediately. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Aoki is looking to work some ground and pound but Equinox has wrist control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Aoki stopping the sweep attempt from Equinox. Equinox has Aoki pulled in close to control his posture. Equinox utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Aoki slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Equinox working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Aoki. Equinox keeping moving, preventing Aoki from controlling successfully. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Aoki sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Equinox's guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Aoki wants to free his trapped foot but Equinox is holding on for dear life with his legs. Aoki is still trying to improve position. Aoki not landing any meaningful shots this time. Aoki throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Equinox is trying to control but can't.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Aoki connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there. Aoki throws a sloppy head kick and Aoki takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Equinox misses with a double jab.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A punch combination from Aoki misses. Aoki blocks the body kick.
Aoki tries to score with a low kick but Equinox moves his leg out of the way. Equinox tries to clinch up but Aoki circles away and keeps his distance. A countering left hand to the body from Aoki misses. Aoki looks for the body kick but Equinox saw that one coming. Aoki fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Equinox on the side of the head. Aoki throws a head kick that misses. It looked like Equinox wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit. Equinox fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Aoki, pushing him back against the cage. Equinox prevents the takedown attempt.

That was a close second round but I would say that John Equinox will probably get the nod. The cut man is working on Masakazu Aoki's cut. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Aoki closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Equinox quickly recovers to half guard. Aoki trying to control the action but Equinox is working from the bottom. Aoki winds up and cracks Equinox with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Aoki performing his best blanket impression for a moment. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Ground and pound from Aoki.
That's one minute gone in the round. Aoki wants to lay and pray for a moment but Equinox keeps working. Equinox won't allow Aoki to pass to mount. Aoki throws a strike but Equinox avoids it easily and moves to full guard. Aoki is stalling in the full guard. Aoki is working Equinox over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes. Aoki looking to sit in guard and control but Equinox gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Aoki is trying to control the position but Equinox postures up. Equinox tries to stand but Aoki is controlling from the bottom. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon. Aoki not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Aoki throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Equinox counters with a straight right hand. Aoki lands a right hook to the body.
Equinox connects with a good right hand that stumbles Aoki. Aoki circles away out of range and recomposes himself. Equinox is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all. Equinox throws a looping overhand right but Aoki ducks down to avoid it. A jab from Equinox finds it's way through Aoki's defenses. Equinox ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Aoki fails to land with a series of punches.
That's three minutes gone in the round. A head kick misses from Aoki. Equinox clobbers Aoki with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise. A looping hook to the body misses from Aoki. Equinox does a little dance to reset his feet. Aoki misses with a hook
and Equinox cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
That has opened up Masakazu Aoki's cut even more. Aoki swings widly with a right hand
and Equinox counters with a two punch combo.
Aoki is rocked! Equinox walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head. Aoki is still on wobbly legs! Can Equinox finish him? Aoki throws a body kick but he was well out of range there. Aoki seems to have recovered his senses. Aoki shoots and misses and Aoki takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Masakazu Aoki seems to be getting the better of the standup. Equinox rushes Aoki and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. With the fighters clinched against the cage, Equinox creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Aoki has hold of one of Equinox's legs. Equinox is fighting the takedown attempt but Aoki gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard. Aoki throws an elbow that misses. Equinox uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Aoki's guard. Nice move by Equinox! Aoki looking for a triangle here. Equinox is fighting it but it looks tight! Aoki pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, Equinox is tapping out - this one is all over!
