Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Hank Johnstone (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alex Karelin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Johnstone might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Hardrock Hallelujah by Lordi. Karelin is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Russian National Anthem. Hank Johnstone had a look across the ring there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Hank Johnstone!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Alex Karelin!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Igor Prikhodko and Valeri Chadov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnstone swings for the body but Karelin moves out of range.
Karelin slips a jab and a cross from Johnstone.
A swing and a miss from Johnstone.
Johnstone looks to score with a jab to the body but Karelin is just out of range.
A combination from Johnstone does no damage.
Hank Johnstone seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Johnstone takes a swing at Karelin's ribcage but misses.
Johnstone will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Johnstone misses with a few strikes there.
Karelin shoots in but Johnstone avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Karelin avoids the body shot from Johnstone.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Johnstone tries to keep at a distance but Karelin has taken the fight into the clinch.
The referee calls for Karelin to work.

It looks like Alex Karelin has been cut.
Karelin dodges the punch combination from Johnstone.
Johnstone fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Karelin manages to avoid it.
Johnstone swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Karelin tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Johnstone swivels and escapes.
Johnstone is looking to wear down Karelin with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.

Johnstone throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Karelin stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Johnstone throws a hook but Karelin avoids it easily.
Johnstone lands a jab to Karelin's midsection.
Karelin bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Johnstone throws a right and a left that both miss.
Johnstone throws a jab when Karelin was well out of range.
Johnstone throws a body punch but Karelin moves out of range.
Johnstone will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Karelin fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Johnstone tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Karelin wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Karelin really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Johnstone. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Johnstone is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Karelin seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Johnstone tries to get to full guard but Karelin has control of the leg.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Johnstone misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Johnstone looks to land a combination but Karelin avoids it well.

Karelin decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Johnstone tries to get to full guard but Karelin has control of the leg.
It looks like Karelin is going to stand back up.
Johnstone tries to kick Karelin off but Karelin keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the ring so we can get back down to business.


Johnstone throws a hook to the side of Karelin's head but Karelin sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Karelin fakes the leg kick and cracks Johnstone in the body.
Johnstone swings for the body but Karelin moves out of range.
Johnstone rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Karelin moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Karelin shoots for a double leg takedown but Johnstone sprawls well. He's pushed Karelin's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Johnstone tries to bum rush Karelin with a series of wild strikes but Karelin uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Karelin takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.

Karelin drops his hands momentarily and Johnstone takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Karelin shoots for a takedown but Johnstone saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Johnstone throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Hank Johnstone is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Karelin changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Johnstone tries to avoid it but Karelin manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Johnstone to the ground. Johnstone escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Johnstone sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

Johnstone has his foot on Karelin's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Karelin works his way back into a safe position though.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Johnstone lands a right hook to the body.
Johnstone bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Karelin's head backwards.


That has opened up Alex Karelin's cut even more.
Karelin takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.

Johnstone throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Karelin sees it coming and avoids it easily.

Johnstone tries to lock up and control but Karelin gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Johnstone is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.

Johnstone is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Karelin is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Karelin tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Johnstone wants to get back to full guard.

Johnstone is looking to control Karelin's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Johnstone avoid being mounted?

Johnstone slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Karelin is tying to control. Johnstone wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Johnstone wants to get back to his feet.
Johnstone is pressing down on Karelin's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Johnstone looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Karelin avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Karelin slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Johnstone, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
