Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Mark Thomas! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Jake Kirby! The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, Paul Tew and James Glass.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Some wild striking there from Thomas.
Kirby only half commits to the counter leg kick. Kirby scores with a kick to the body.
Mark Thomas seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Kirby lands a leg kick that knocks Thomas off balance momentarily. Thomas closes this distance looking for a takedown but Kirby circles away. Kirby lands a head kick. Thomas smiles back at him and beckons him forward. Thomas takes a kick to the side of the head. Thomas shoots in looking for a takedown. Kirby tries to sprawl out of it but Thomas keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Kirby manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Thomas shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mark Thomas. That's going to take a lot out of him. Ouch! a nice leg kick from Kirby, right into the meat.
Thomas shoots in looking for a takedown. Kirby tries to sprawl out of it but Thomas keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Kirby manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Thomas has been working on his balance at Quick Fingers BEST BANG FOR BUCK Gym, so perhaps that has help him stuff some of the takedown attempts by Kirby. Kirby connects with a leg kick. Thomas looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kirby keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Thomas. Thomas has his takedown stuffed and Kirby counters with a slapping leg kick. Thomas takes a swing at Kirby's ribcage but misses. Thomas misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. A slapping leg kick lands for Kirby.
Jake Kirby is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Thomas tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Kirby swivels and escapes. Kirby looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Kirby connects with a solid leg kick. Kirby moves into range and lands a nice leg kick. Kirby throws a nice outside leg kick. A chopping leg kick lands by Kirby. Kirby slips a jab and a cross from Thomas.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Thomas shoots and misses and Kirby counters with a head kick. That will keep Thomas thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks! The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Kirby feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Thomas's calf. Kirby lands with a slapping head kick. Thomas on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Kirby. Kirby obviously looking to wear him down.
Thomas closes the distance and clinches up with Kirby, looking for a takedown. Thomas pushes Kirby against the cage but Kirby circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Thomas tries to close the distance and clinch up but Kirby swats him away and circles back towards the center. Kirby lands with a kick to the temple. Thomas shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
Thomas is rocked! Kirby leaves Thomas with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Oh Thomas is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!! Kirby connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there. Thomas seems to have got his legs back now. Kirby lets loose with a powerful body kick. Thomas will feel that in the morning. Kirby lands a big head kick that sends Thomas tumbling to the mat! Kirby takes a step backwards and waves Thomas back to his feet - he wants the finish! Kirby and Thomas are patiently standing in front of each other looking for an opening. Kirby throws a head kick. It's landed, knocking Thomas into next week! Ooooh that was huge! Kirby knows it - he's on the cage flexing is biceps. That's a bit weird considering he won by kick but whatever.
