PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Barao DeSilva (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gerald Minor (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Barao DeSilva!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gerald Minor!
The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, John Kavanagh and John Roberts.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Minor needs to keep his hands up - DeSilva had a free shot at his head there.
DeSilva shoots for a double leg takedown but Minor sprawls well. He's pushed DeSilva's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Minor feints the counter takedown.
Minor leaves DeSilva with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
A punch combination from DeSilva misses.
Minor is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Minor checks a leg kick.
Minor swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Minor swings for the body but DeSilva moves out of range.
DeSilva gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Minor counters with a straight right hand.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Barao DeSilva. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
DeSilva chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Minor can pounce on him.
Minor throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by DeSilva.
DeSilva scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Minor misses with a straight right.
DeSilva fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Minor has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
DeSilva shoots in looking for a takedown. Minor tries to sprawl out of it but DeSilva keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Minor manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Minor chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before DeSilva can pounce on him.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
DeSilva misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
DeSilva throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Minor is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.

DeSilva throws a leg kick

and Minor counters with a shoot takedown. DeSilva fights it but they end up in guard.
Minor working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

DeSilva has an active guard here but Minor has managed to pass into half guard.
Minor throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Minor wants to lay and pray for a moment but DeSilva keeps working.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
DeSilva slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Minor wants to control from the top but DeSilva keeps moving.

DeSilva throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Minor stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. DeSilva swivels though and keeps the full guard.
DeSilva looking to hit a scissor sweep but Minor is one step ahead there.
Minor must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Minor keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of DeSilva's head.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Minor postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Minor won't allow DeSilva to sweep him here.
Minor postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Minor missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Minor lands a couple of elbows.
DeSilva working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Minor.

DeSilva has his foot on Minor's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Minor works his way back into a safe position though.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Minor lying in DeSilva's guard like a wet fish here, stalling away. DeSilva decides he's had enough of all that nonsense - he escapes his hips and locks up an armbar! Wow, that was slick! Minor taps! This one is aaaaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Barao DeSilva!
A relieved looking Barao DeSilva thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
