PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Edinger Nucleus (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Wayne Conner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Conner has chosen The Man Who Sold The World as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Edinger Nucleus!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Wayne Conner!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Trevor Gratis and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Conner throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Nucleus sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Nucleus is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Conner.
Conner attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Conner takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?
Nucleus lands a leg kick that knocks Conner off balance momentarily.
Nucleus tests Conner's chin there with a solid looking shot.
A left lands for Conner.
A low kick from Nucleus misses
and Conner counters with a stiff right hand.
Conner comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
The fighters circling - Conner throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Nucleus scores with a head kick.
Nucleus pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Nucleus loads up on a big right hand but Conner slips the punch.
Nucleus slips a jab from Conner.
Nucleus swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Good exchange - Conner coming out on top.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Conner, right into the meat.

Nucleus throws a push kick but Conner slaps the foot to one side.
Conner lands the left hand.
A slapping body kick lands there for Nucleus.
Nucleus takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Nucleus drops his hands momentarily and Conner takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Nucleus lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Conner connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.


It looks like Edinger Nucleus has been cut.
Conner shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Nucleus looks for the body kick but Conner saw that one coming.

A big head kick from Nucleus and Conner is sent sprawling to the canvas!


Conner is rocked!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Conner can't keep his opponent in guard - Nucleus advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Conner is still in real trouble! Can Nucleus finish him?
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Nucleus is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Nucleus sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Conner defending well though.

Nucleus is trying to work for a kimura but Conner is defending well.
Nucleus moves nicely into side control.
Conner felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Conner seems to have recovered his senses.
Nucleus has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Conner!
Nucleus wants to control the pace but Conner is squirming around nicely.

Nucleus lands a nice shot to the head.
Nucleus thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.

Conner tries to hold on but Nucleus postures up.

Nucleus is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Conner can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Conner is looking to improve his position but Nucleus isn't that keen on the idea.
Nucleus controlling from mount.
Conner wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Nucleus.
Nucleus punching from mount but Conner doing a good job of avoiding damage.

Nucleus controlling his opponent.
Nucleus unloads with some shots from mount but Conner bucks and avoids them well.
Conner manages to regain half guard whilst avoiding the strikes.
Nucleus trying to control the action but Conner is working from the bottom.
Nucleus uses his free foot to push down on Conner's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Conner.
Nucleus is looking to work his way around to Conner's back. He needs to be careful though, as he's in danger of losing this dominant position.
Nucleus trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Conner tries to hold on but Nucleus pushes him away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Conner lands a nice looking body shot.

and Nucleus counters with a slapping leg kick.
Wayne Conner seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Nucleus throws a right hand that Conner ducks under and follows up with a left that Conner also avoids with ease.
Nucleus walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Nucleus is looking to clinch.
Nucleus throws a body punch but Conner moves out of range.
Conner throws out a counter right but Nucleus avoids it with no problem.
Nucleus tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Conner paws at him with a jab and circles away.

A jab from Conner finds it's way through Nucleus's defenses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nucleus fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Conner manages to avoid it.

Nucleus sets himself and throws a head kick that knocks Conner to the ground! Nucleus dives into full mount looking to finish!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Nucleus wants to control the pace but Conner is squirming around nicely.
Nucleus tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Conner manages to regain half guard whilst avoiding the strikes.

Nucleus is keen to just control but Conner is a slippery customer.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Nucleus is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Conner won't allow Nucleus to pass to mount.
Nucleus lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Edinger Nucleus overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Nucleus content to control rather than advance.
Nucleus is keen to just control but Conner is a slippery customer.

Nucleus is working for a kimura from half guard. He's really concentrating on the hold and it's allowed Conner to slip a leg under and get back to full guard.

Nucleus wants to pass the guard but Conner is keeping the position.
Conner keeping moving, preventing Nucleus from controlling successfully.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Conner connects with a single shot there.
Conner misses with an uppercut

and Nucleus counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Nucleus.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.

Nucleus connects with a nasty looking knee right to Conner's face.
Conner wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Nucleus has not gone for a single takedown so far in this fight, which seems like a very strange tactic when you consider that he has the superior wrestling and BJJ.
Conner misses with a body punch.
Nucleus unloads a knee to the mid-section.
Nucleus is leaning against Conner and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.
Nucleus tries to throw a body punch but Conner avoids it by throwing Nucleus back against the cage.

Nucleus throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Conner's head.
Nucleus lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Conner misses with a wild combination.
Nucleus is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Conner can do to turn this around?
Conner blocks a head kick by Nucleus.
Nucleus is looking to clinch but Conner is avoiding it.

Conner lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

Nucleus wants to land a leg kick but Conner is out of range.

Nucleus has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Wayne Conner has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Nucleus throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Nucleus buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Conner throws a leg kick which misses Nucleus's front leg but catches the back leg as Nucleus tries to avoid it.

Nucleus misses with a wild body shot.
Nucleus slips a jab from Conner.
Conner throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Edinger Nucleus is winning the standup battle so far.
Conner keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Conner dips to his left and cracks Nucleus with an uppercut!
Conner swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Conner.
Nucleus lifts his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.
Conner throws out a powerful jab.
Conner cracks Nucleus with a good jab.
Nucleus uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Conner.
Nucleus swings for the body but Conner moves out of range.
Nucleus lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.

Conner throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Conner sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
Nucleus is looking to wear down Conner with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Conner takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Conner tries to break the clinch but Nucleus is controlling the position.

Nucleus lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage.
Nucleus throws a knee to the head but misses.

Nucleus tries a body shot but Conner blocks it.
Nucleus lands with a short head shot on the inside.

I was talking to Nucleus's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.
Conner tries to work over Nucleus's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

And that's the end of the fight!
Edinger Nucleus showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Nucleus has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
