Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Sammy Sammich! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Johnny Rico! The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Frank Dennis and Chris Downing.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rico misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Rico tries to land a leg kick but Sammich saw it coming and moves away.
Sammich throws a leg kick and Sammich takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Sammich has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Gym of the Gods in the buildup to the fight. Sammich misses with a low kick.
Sammich throws a leg kick letting Rico counter with a right hand. Nice defenses there by Rico. A leg kick checked by Rico. Rico swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made. Rico throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Sammich throws a quick inside leg kick. Sammich throws a body kick, spinning off balance and Rico counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Rico tries to close the distance and clinch up but Sammich swats him away and circles back towards the center. Sammich is looking to counter with a body kick.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jab from Sammich.
It looks like Johnny Rico has been cut. Sammy Sammich seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Sammich thuds a left hand into Rico's body. Rico throws a series of punches but Sammich moves out of range. Rico is trying hard to land a takedown here. Sammich sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. It looked like Sammich wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit. Sammich uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Rico. Sammich throws a quick counter kick to the body but Rico avoids it. Sammich lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh. Sammich scores with a slapping inside leg kick. A good leg kick by Sammich. The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Rico checks a leg kick. Rico swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made. Rico is looking to clinch.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A big right from Rico misses. Sammich motions for Rico to come forward. Sammich throws a leg kick but it misses it's target. Sammich lands a big head kick that sends Rico tumbling to the mat! Sammich takes a step backwards and waves Rico back to his feet - he wants the finish!
Rico is rocked! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Rico tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Sammich defends well and Rico ends up having to push Sammich into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Rico is still on wobbly legs! Can Sammich finish him? Sammich throws a sloppy head kick and Rico moves out of range easily. It seemed like Rico was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it. Some bone on bone action there as Rico checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one. Rico seems to have recovered his senses. That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Rico crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Sammich - the referee stops the clock and Rico gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Sammich. Rico manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes. Rico throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Rico swings for the body but Sammich moves out of range.
Nice body kick from Sammich. Rico looks winded! Sammich swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sammich is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Rico. Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Sammich. Rico shrugs it off though. Rico avoids a kick to the body.
Sammy Sammich is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Sammich feints and then winds up with a huge right hand that connects perfectly and sends Rico sprawling to the canvas! Rico rolls over backwards and springs off the cage and manages to regain his footing - how acrobatic! Oh, he's still wobbly - can Sammich finish him?!
A low kick from Sammich is predictable there and Rico counters with a slapping leg kick. A looping hook to the body misses from Sammich. Rico does a little dance to reset his feet. Sammich tries to land a front kick but Rico steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Sammich swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Rico is clearly looking to counter with head kicks. A good leg kick by Sammich. An inside leg kick from Sammich misses. And an attempted straight right on the counter from Rico! But no joy.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sammich tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Rico was well out of range. Poor timing from Sammich. Rico tries to clinch and Sammich connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
That has opened up Johnny Rico's cut even more. Sammich cracks Rico with a brutal left hook that knocks him out cold! This one is over in a flash! Game over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:19 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Sammy Sammich! After the fight, Sammy Sammich was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
