PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Oleg Alekseev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Renzo Machida (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alekseev comes to the cage accompanied by Imperium. Machida has chosen No more Shadows for the Past- NARNIA as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 23 - 20 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Oleg Alekseev!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 45 - 21 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Renzo Machida!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Don Winkell and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Alekseev shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Machida makes his way to full guard, as Alekseev worked for a kimura.
Alekseev trying to control the position from guard on top but Machida is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Alekseev with a flurry of punches that miss.
Alekseev makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Alekseev tries to free his leg and advance position but Machida is retaining full guard.
Alekseev stopping the sweep attempt from Machida.
Machida preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Alekseev sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Alekseev postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Machida is pulling down on Alekseev's head to control his posture.
Alekseev in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Alekseev has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.
Alekseev pushes down on Machida's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Alekseev seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Machida does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Alekseev is thwarting Machida's attempts to control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Alekseev wants to work for an arm triangle but Machida is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Alekseev wants to lay and pray for a moment but Machida keeps working.

Alekseev is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Machida defends it well.
Alekseev wants to control but Machida is keeping him busy.
Alekseev thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Machida is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Alekseev has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Alekseev not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Alekseev trying to mount his opponent but Machida defends it.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Machida moves away from the strike by Alekseev.
A little jabbing left from Machida on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Alekseev shoots in but no luck this time.
Machida stuns Alekseev with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
A slow jab from Alekseev misses its intended target.
Machida has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Alekseev is landing a low percentage of strikes.

It looks like Oleg Alekseev has been cut.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Oleg Alekseev. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Alekseev is breathing heavily.

and Machida counters with a crisp one two that drops Alekseev! Machida thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Alekseev to his feet! Alekseev is in big trouble!

Machida drops Alekseev with a hook right on the temple. He thinks about going to the ground but Alekseev looks back up at him and smiles so Machida waves him back to his feet - he obviously thinks he can knock him out after that shot landed.


Alekseev is rocked!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
A big right followed by a crushing left from Machida knocks Alekseev out cold! Ouch - that one's going to be featured in highlight reels for years to come!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:43 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Renzo Machida!
A less than humble Renzo Machida misjudged his post fight interview somewhat and came across a little too arrogant whilst trying to hype up his own abilities.
