Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Fritz Gates! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ryo Sawamura! The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Robert Twigg and Frank Dennis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sawamura shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Gates counters by clinching up. Sawamura tries to score a body lock takedown but Gates shows good agility there to stay on his feet. Gates pulls Sawamura into guard.
Gates wants to sweep here but Sawamura controlling him for the moment. Gates keeping moving, preventing Sawamura from controlling successfully. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gates keeping full guard, as Sawamura tries to pass. Sawamura wants to control from the top but Gates keeps moving. Sawamura should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gates is looking to stand up but Sawamura isn't so interested in that idea. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gates is on top in guard.
Sawamura is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Gates got a little sloppy there for a moment and Sawamura has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Gates has managed to get both his arms back between Sawamura's legs - danger averted. Sawamura seems keen to control Gates's posture. Gates avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gates is looking to work some ground and pound but Sawamura has wrist control. Gates missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Sawamura escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Gates gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Sawamura controls Gates momentarily but Gates frees himself. Sawamura avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gates throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Sawamura working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Gates. Gates works over Sawamura with some ground and pound from guard. Gates throws a sloppy strike and Sawamura has hooked up an armbar on the loose arm! He's turned and extended fully! Gates is forced to tap! Great BJJ from Sawamura!
