PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ryu Matsumoto (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Robert Wang (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Matsumoto comes to the cage accompanied by Pink Spider. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ryu Matsumoto!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Robert Wang!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Frank Dennis and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Wang moves into range and clinches up with Matsumoto.
Wang fails to pull the fight into his guard.
A right hook to the body lands for Matsumoto.

Matsumoto breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Wang shoots in looking for a takedown but Matsumoto manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Wang's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Matsumoto seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Wang for as long as he can get away with.

Matsumoto distracts Wang with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Matsumoto is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

As Wang tries to get set, Matsumoto tries to push him back and clinch up but Wang manages to avoid the attempt.
Matsumoto will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Matsumoto fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Wang sprawls well initially but Matsumoto persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Matsumoto takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Wang is looking to improve his position.
Matsumoto takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Matsumoto lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Matsumoto has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Matsumoto's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Wang throws a lazy uppercut
and Matsumoto counters with a left and a right that stings Wang.
Wang is looking to clinch.
Wang shoots in for a takedown but Matsumoto shows good takedown defense.
Matsumoto changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Wang scores with a head kick. Matsumoto tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.
A kick lands to the mid section there for Wang.
Wang tries to clinch there but Matsumoto circles away.

Matsumoto gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Wang regains guard.

Matsumoto is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Wang working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Matsumoto doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Matsumoto manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Wang takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Wang unleashes a big counter combination but Matsumoto bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Matsumoto connects with a nice short shot to Wang's temple.

Wang changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Matsumoto tries to avoid it but Wang manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Matsumoto to the ground. Matsumoto escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Wang is absolutely dripping with sweat - he looks exhausted.
Matsumoto is nestled in close to Wang, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Matsumoto is taking a breather. Wang says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Matsumoto tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Wang swivels and escapes.
Wang lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
Wang closes this distance looking for a takedown but Matsumoto circles away.

Matsumoto shoots in looking for a takedown. Wang tries to sprawl out of it but Matsumoto keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Wang manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Robert Wang seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Matsumoto looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Wang is fending him off so far but Matsumoto persists. Nope, Wang circles away and we're back to standing.

Matsumoto looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Wang with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Robert Wang has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Matsumoto, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
