PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Lance Springfield (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rick Rippen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rippen is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by SONG FOR THE SUSPECT. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Rick Rippen!
The judges for this bout are Michael Johnstone, Sandra Marshall and Dirk Anderson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Springfield rushes Rippen and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Springfield breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Nice takedown defense from Springfield. No joy for Rippen on that attempt.
Springfield appears to be looking for a counter punch to the body.
Springfield swats away the attempt to clinch by Rippen.

Rippen feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Springfield has his feet on Rippen's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

Springfield moves into range and clinches up with Rippen.

Springfield is looking for a sweep. Rippen is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Rippen sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Springfield's guard.

Rippen is taking a breather. Springfield says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Rippen working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Springfield wants to control but Rippen is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Springfield tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Rippen thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Springfield wants to control but Rippen postures up.
Rippen tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Springfield sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Lance Springfield will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Rippen shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Springfield defends it nicely.

Rippen scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Springfield tries to reverse the position but Rippen maintains control.

Rick Rippen has got the better of the ground game so far.
Rippen won't let Springfield get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.

Springfield is wriggling around trying to escape.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Rippen has control of Springfield's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Springfield regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Rippen avoids the attempt from Springfield to control.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Rippen lands a nice shot to the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rick Rippen showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Springfield is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Rippen is defending well for now.
Springfield's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Springfield breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Rippen throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.

Rippen wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Springfield is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Rippen gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Rippen is working for takedown but Springfield is calmly controlling the position for now.

Rippen is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Rippen postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that's the end of the fight!
Lance Springfield showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Springfield has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
