PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Yury Vesnev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Brandon Marsden (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Marsden is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Feiticeira by Deftones. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 33 - 12 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Yury Vesnev!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 29 - 19 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Brandon Marsden!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, William Gold and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Good exchange - Vesnev coming out on top.
Marsden is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Vesnev.
A lazy body kick from Vesnev
and Marsden counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Marsden tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Vesnev paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Vesnev feinted with a counter takedown.
Marsden looks to land a right hand but Vesnev moved out of range.
Vesnev throws a nice looking combination but Marsden bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
We've been hearing reports that Vesnev has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Marsden pivots, looking for a leg kick but Vesnev is out of range and Marsden settles back down.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Vesnev crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Marsden - the referee stops the clock and Vesnev gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Marsden. Vesnev manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.
Vesnev keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Marsden.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Marsden.
Marsden just misses with a punch to the body.
Vesnev half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Marsden misses with a low kick.
Vesnev tries to counter with a takedown but Marsden is quick to defend against it.
Nice body kick there by Marsden.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Vesnev defending well as Marsden loads up on a big left hand.
Marsden looks to score with a jab to the body but Vesnev is just out of range.
Marsden walks into a straight right hand from Vesnev.

Marsden misses with a wild combination.
Marsden rushes in with a sloppy looking punch

and Vesnev counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Marsden!
Vesnev trying to control the action but Marsden is working from the bottom.
Vesnev throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Vesnev working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
Marsden is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Vesnev tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Marsden is looking to reverse the position.
Marsden is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Vesnev off and has taken his back!
Vesnev is really stuck here.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Vesnev is working hard here to advance position.
Marsden trying desperately to keep hold of the dominant position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Marsden throwing wild punches that miss their target.
Vesnev is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
Marsden lands a punch that was close to the back of the head but the ref thinks it's OK.

Marsden thows a huge left but connects with the canvas and not his opponent.
You can see the frustration on Vesnev's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

Marsden misses with a punch to the head.
Marsden keeps control of the position as Vesnev tries to break free.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Marsden landing with strikes.
Marsden gets his hooks in and is throwing strikes.
Marsden trying to control momentarily.
Marsden lands strikes to the head.
Marsden scores with punches to the body.
Vesnev tries to roll but Marsden sticks to his back.
Marsden somehow managing to miss with a strike from the back.
Vesnev breaks Marsden's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
Our spies down at at Heart Cave inform us that Marsden has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off?
Marsden has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Marsden working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Vesnev doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Vesnev manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Marsden is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Marsden wants to sweep but no luck.
Marsden has momentary wrist control but Vesnev slips an elbow through the middle.
Vesnev preventing the sweep.
Vesnev working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Marsden's head.

Vesnev got a little sloppy there for a moment and Marsden has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Vesnev has managed to get both his arms back between Marsden's legs - danger averted.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Brandon Marsden dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Vesnev ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Marsden moves away.
Marsden is looking to chop away at Vesnev's legs.
Marsden throws an off balance right hand

and Vesnev counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Marsden is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Vesnev stands over his opponent and dives in with a flying punch! Marsden throws up his legs and catches Vesnev in a triangle! Oh this looks tight! Vesnev tries to escape but he's forced to tap! Wow, fantastic work there by Marsden! That came out of nowhere!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:36 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Brandon Marsden!
An intense looking Brandon Marsden took to the microphone post fight and gave a little speech: 'A weakling like you doesn't deserve fists to fight with, now go fade to nothingness!'.
