Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, James Burns! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Govan Aerts! The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Thiago Cunha and Luis Engracia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Aerts changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Burns looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Aerts misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Aerts has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Aerts tries to land with some ground and pound but misses. Aerts creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Burns sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike. Aerts looks up at the clock and then as Burns takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Aerts smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
It looks like James Burns has been cut. Aerts is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Burns knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Burns's coaches at Cozad MMA Rio have been working on his defensive grappling in preparation for this fight so let's see if he can get out of this tricky position. Aerts throwing shots but missing, from side control.
