PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Michael Alves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Greg Gaines (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Greg Gaines told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Michael Alves!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Greg Gaines!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Russell Pearce and Columbo Gatti.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Alves tries to sprawl but Gaines drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Gaines looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gaines working Alves over with strikes.
Gaines sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Alves defending well though.
Alves works his way to full guard. Good work.
Gaines controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Gaines in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Gaines stopping the sweep attempt from Alves.
Gaines is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gaines trying to control but Alves is working from the bottom.
Gaines trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Alves utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Gaines not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Alves is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Gaines dives into side control.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Gaines avoids the body shot from Alves.
Gaines changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Alves tries to avoid it but Gaines manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Alves to the ground. Alves escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Alves is looking for a counter combo.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Gaines.
Alves is looking to counter punch.
Alves fails in his attempt to clinch.
Gaines has a takedown stuffed.
Michael Alves has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Greg Gaines.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Alves will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Gaines shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Alves as he jumps to the side.
Gaines goes for a double leg but Alves avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Alves continues to drive forward.
Nice sprawl there from Alves as Gaines shoots in.
Gaines tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Alves paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Gaines shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Gaines shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Alves sprawls well. Alves wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gaines gets slowly back to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gaines keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
No joy there for Alves, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Gaines shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Alves sprawls well. Alves wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gaines gets slowly back to his feet.
Alves takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Alves misses with a body kick.
Gaines will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Gaines tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Alves defends well and Gaines ends up having to push Alves into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Alves throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Alves throws a big shot that misses.
Gaines uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Alves.
Alves throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Gaines feints the counter takedown.
Alves lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Gaines circles away quickly and effectively.

Gaines looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Alves!
Gaines landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.
Gaines content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Gaines lands a decent elbow from side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Michael Alves will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Gaines shoots in for a takedown but Alves shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Alves is looking for a counter combo.
Alves pivots, looking for a leg kick but Gaines is out of range and Alves settles back down.
Gaines drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Alves defends it well.
Greg Gaines seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gaines is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Alves appears to be looking for a big counter.
Alves looks for the body kick but Gaines saw that one coming.
Horrible takedown attempt by Gaines or perhaps it was just good defense by Alves, which made it look bad.
Michael Alves has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Greg Gaines.

Gaines closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Alves wants to control but Gaines is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Gaines throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Alves wants to get back to his feet.
Gaines not landing any meaningful shots this time.
We've been informed that Gaines has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Gaines seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Alves has hold of Gaines's hands but Gaines slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Gaines slows the pace down in half guard.
Gaines landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Gaines slips a nice elbow through Alves's hands, connecting with Alves's forehead.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Alves wants to get back to full guard.
Gaines frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Alves is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.
Alves on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Alves tries to get out of the position.
Gaines in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.


Alves is rocked!
Oooooh, big shot lands for Gaines! Alves is hurt baaadly! Gaines is firing away with more strikes - Alves is covering up... the ref is warning him to do something. He's just covering up though still and the ref has to step in to end the fight! This one is all over!
