Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jin Kazama! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, PJ McDermott ! The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Daniel Cesar and Felipe Paraventi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! McDermott throws out a powerful jab. McDermott connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head. McDermott just misses with a punch to the body.
Kazama takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it. Kazama fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. McDermott just misses with a punch to the body.
Kazama drops down looking for a counter takedown but McDermott sprawls and moves away. Kazama gets the takedown into side control. McDermott can't do much from the bottom here. Kazama is trying to get an arm triangle but McDermott is defending well. Kazama trying to control the action but McDermott is working from the bottom. McDermott tries to improve position but can't. Kazama tries for a kimura but McDermott is defending well.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kazama thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. McDermott throws a couple of punches but he's in a bad position and they don't land. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon. Kazama working away.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. McDermott has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout. McDermott gets caught napping as Kazama dives in and scores a takedown. McDermott manages to retain guard. McDermott tries to land a sweep but no joy. McDermott keeping full guard, as Kazama tries to pass. Kazama slips nicely into half guard. McDermott is looking to escape.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kazama seems to be looking for submissions.
McDermott tries to kick Kazama off but Kazama keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. Kazama is working for a submission of some sort.
McDermott is concentrating on defense, preventing Kazama from advancing position. Kazama is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, McDermott has managed to free his arm - good work.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Kazama misses with a takedown attempt and McDermott counters with a crisp right hand that drops Kazama! McDermott lets Kazama back up to his feet, looking for a finish!
Kazama is rocked! This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Kazama leaves his chin hanging out and McDermott seizes the opportunity with an uppercut! Kazama crumbles to the floor in a heap, and the referee steps in and tends to the downed fighter! What a knockout!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:52 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). PJ McDermott ! PJ McDermott decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
