PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Carlos Cardenas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jonathon Steel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Steel has chosen Mustasch - Double Nature as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Carlos Cardenas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jonathon Steel!
The judges for this bout are Sosuke Kotani, Shigeki Sano and Yukihiro Yamamoto.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Steel has a takedown stuffed.
Cardenas shoots and misses

and Steel counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Cardenas's guard now.
Steel slips nicely into half guard.
Cardenas wants to improve his position but Steel is controlling well.
Steel trying to pass the guard but Cardenas defending well.
Cardenas throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

Steel seems to be looking for submissions.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Steel in particular looking to stall.
Steel seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Cardenas does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Steel is looking to take a break and control but Cardenas is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Steel drops back looking for a leg! Cardenas is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Cardenas manages to kick Steel off! Steel jumps back into Cardenas's guard.
Cardenas tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Cardenas pushes Steel off and gets back to his feet.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Cardenas looks to land a combination but Steel avoids it well.
Steel tries for a takedown but Cardenas circles away easily

and Cardenas counters with a shoot takedown. Steel fights it but they end up in guard.
Steel wants to stand up but Cardenas is controlling him.
Steel looks gassed!
Steel manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Steel prevents Cardenas from getting the reversal.
Cardenas is trying to stand up.

Steel can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Cardenas is looking to escape.

Steel is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Cardenas can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Cardenas is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Steel prevents Cardenas from getting the reversal.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Steel tries to control but Cardenas wriggling away.
Cardenas wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Steel is looking to control Cardenas but Cardenas is wriggling around and keeping busy.

Cardenas manages to stand up with Steel still on his back. Eventually Steel drops to his feet and we're back in the standing position.

and Steel counters with a nice double leg into side control. Cardenas won't be happy with that.
Steel wants to lay and pray for a moment but Cardenas keeps working.

Steel tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
You can see the frustration on Cardenas's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Cardenas is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Steel has just dragged him back down to the mat.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Horrible takedown by Cardenas or perhaps it was just good defense by Steel which made him look bad.
Cardenas wants to clinch up but Steel keeps it at a distance.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Steel looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Steel seems keen to control Cardenas's posture.

Steel has his foot on Cardenas's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Cardenas works his way back into a safe position though.
Steel wants to stand up but Cardenas is controlling him.
Cardenas has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Steel escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Cardenas gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Cardenas is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Cardenas seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Cardenas shoots in and bounces Steel off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Cardenas wants to control from the top but Steel keeps moving.
Steel not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Cardenas trying to control the position from guard on top but Steel is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Steel wants to sweep but no luck.
Cardenas knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Steel on the ground.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

and Steel counters with a series of strikes. Cardenas will be more careful next time no doubt.

Cardenas can't keep his opponent in guard - Steel advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Cardenas is refusing to be controlled, as Steel sits in half guard.

Steel is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Cardenas tries to get to full guard but Steel has control of the leg.

Cardenas is trying to stand.
Steel has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Steel throws some wild stikes that Cardenas manages to avoid easily.
Cardenas tries to hold on but Steel postures up.
Steel tries to control but Cardenas wriggling away.
Cardenas stops Steel from taking his back. Still, being mounted isn't any better.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Cardenas is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.
Cardenas is squirming around, avoiding Steel's attempts to control the action.
Carlos Cardenas overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Steel has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Cardenas should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Steel has tightened it up now! Cardenas should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
