Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Lavrentis Papadopoulos! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Tim Wallace! The judges for this bout are Aleksandr Martynov, Igor Prikhodko and Dmitry Maklakov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Papadopoulos tries to clinch up. Papadopoulos stuffs the takedown. Papadopoulos is looking to clinch. Wallace replies with a solid counter kick to the body but Papadopoulos blocks it well. Papadopoulos throws a sloppy head kick and Wallace moves out of range easily. Papadopoulos moves in looking to clinch but Wallace pushes him off. Wallace is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Papadopoulos with a body shot. Papadopoulos drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles. Papadopoulos fails to land the takedown. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Papadopoulos shoots in for a takedown but Wallace shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Papadopoulos fails with the takedown. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lavrentis Papadopoulos. That's going to take a lot out of him. Papadopoulos shoots in looking for a takedown. Wallace tries to sprawl out of it but Papadopoulos keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Wallace manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Papadopoulos takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor. Lavrentis Papadopoulos seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Wallace throws a chopping leg kick but Papadopoulos manages to avoid taking any serious damage. Papadopoulos tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Wallace counters with a right hand to the body. Wallace closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Wallace has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Papadopoulos is trying to keep an underhook but Wallace manages to get the takedown into half guard. Wallace looks to score some points with some ground and pound. Wallace has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Wallace is figuring out what he wants to do next. Wallace lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt. Wallace landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent. Wallace winds up and cracks Papadopoulos with a swinging punch to the side of the head. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Ground and pound from Wallace. Wallace landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Papadopoulos is rocked! Wallace is nestled in close to Papadopoulos, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Oh Papadopoulos is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Papadopoulos on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound. My spies in Cozad MMA St Petersburg inform me that Wallace has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
