The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mort throws a sloppy head kick and Bird moves out of range easily. Mort tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Bird was well out of range. Poor timing from Mort. Bird shoots in and drives through. Mort sprawls well. Bird closes the distance looking to clinch and Mort counters with a stiff right hand. Mort slaps away a takedown attempt from Bird, before circling back to the center of the mat. Bird tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Mort paws at him with a jab and circles away. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Bird shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Mort pinned against the cage. Mort gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Vance Bird. That's going to take a lot out of him. Mort drives through with a takedown into Bird's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mort sitting in guard, not really doing much. Mort won't allow Bird to get back to his feet. Bird working a defensive guard but Mort manages to pass into side control anyway.
Mort throws an elbow but Bird slips to the side and avoids it well. Bird can't do much from the bottom here. Mort just content to control the position. It looks like Mort might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Mort has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Bird is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Mort yanks on the arm and Bird is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Mort.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:18 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Mat Mort!
