Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Long! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
12 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Irving Massimo! The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Chris Downing and Tiny Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Massimo shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Massimo was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Long tries to buck Massimo off but Massimo is having none of it. You can see the frustration on Long's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Sloppy strikes there by Massimo. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Massimo working the ground and pound. Long is in a tricky position. We've heard reports from his gym mates at that he's been drilling escapes, so let's see if he can get back to his feet. Long parries the strikes from Massimo easily there. Massimo is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Long to escape.
Long defending against the ground and pound. Massimo working the ground and pound but Long is defending the strikes. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Long avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Massimo. Long is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Long wants to control but Massimo postures up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Massimo thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Long is trying to improve his position. Long is holding Massimo down, trying to stall. Massimo has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Long dodges the ground and pound from Massimo. Massimo is looking to take a break and control but Long is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Massimo tries to land with some ground and pound but misses. Massimo is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Long knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Long tries to buck Massimo off but Massimo is having none of it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Massimo scoring with punches from side control. Long isn't going anywhere. Long on the wrong end of some ground and pound. Massimo lands a strong strike to the head of Long. That's dazed him! Massimo looking to finish here. Long is waving his arms around trying to block but he's hurt badly - Massimo lands more strikes and the referee steps in to end the fight!
