PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Dan Chipman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Malacon Malbano (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Malacon Malbano told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dan Chipman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Malacon Malbano!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Wesley Smith and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A head kick misses from Malbano.

Chipman drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Malbano wants to improve his position but instead Chipman has moved into half guard.
Chipman throwing shots but Malbano is blocking nicely.
Chipman has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Chipman wants to free his trapped foot but Malbano is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Chipman seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Chipman thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Chipman is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Malbano is just riding it out for now. Chipman eventually gives up the hold.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Chipman drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Chipman thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Chipman shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Malbano's guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Chipman tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Chipman is tying to control. Malbano wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Chipman changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Malbano looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Chipman postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Chipman swings around for an armbar but Malbano sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Chipman's guard.

and Chipman counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Malbano looks to land a combination but Chipman avoids it well.

and Chipman counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Malbano's guard now.

Malbano isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Chipman stacks Malbano on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Chipman!

Malbano is looking to regain half guard here but Chipman keeps moving and retains side control.
The strikes coming from Chipman are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Malbano sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.

Malbano takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.

Malbano tries to bench press Chipman off him but Chipman keeps the position.

Chipman decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Malbano misses with a low kick as Chipman jumps back.
Chipman changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Malbano tries to avoid it but Chipman manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Malbano to the ground. Malbano escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Malbano throws a sloppy head kick and Chipman moves out of range easily.
Both fighters circling a little - Chipman finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.

and Chipman counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Malbano has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Chipman is working away from the top position though.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Dan Chipman overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Chipman sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Malbano's guard.
