PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Shinji Tanaka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Victor Stevens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Tanaka's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Yuudachi. The crowd seem to be enjoying Stevens's choice of entrance music: Can't Hold Us. Victor Stevens has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 16 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Shinji Tanaka!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 20 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Victor Stevens!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Tanaka feints and as Stevens raises his hands in defense, Tanaka changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Stevens is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Tanaka presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.
Tanaka misses with a hook from the clinch.
Stevens is trying to break the clinch but Tanaka has him pressed against the cage.
Tanaka tries to throw a body punch but Stevens avoids it by throwing Tanaka back against the cage.
Tanaka working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely.
A right hook to the body lands for Tanaka.

Tanaka has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Stevens regains guard immediately.
Stevens wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Tanaka manages to pass to side control.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Stevens regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Tanaka.
Tanaka slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Tanaka throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Stevens is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Tanaka stands and throws Stevens's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Tanaka wants to control but Stevens is keeping him busy.

Tanaka working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Stevens stops Tanaka from passing to mount.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Tanaka wants to lay and pray for a moment but Stevens keeps working.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Stevens gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
Stevens reaches up to try and control the position but Tanaka seems to have an arm triangle now! Uh oh! Stevens rolls and tries to escape and now Tanaka has his back!
I would not like to be Stevens right now.
Stevens looking very determined here, making life difficult for Tanaka.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Tanaka tries to get the hooks in deep but Stevens pushed the leg off.
Tanaka lands punches and elbows.

Tanaka has got one arm under Stevens's chin. This could be trouble... Stevens trying to control the other hand but Tanaka gets it free and sqeezes tight - just a matter of time now! Yep, Stevens has tapped out! The fight is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:42 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Shinji Tanaka!
Shinji Tanaka was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
