Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jim Halpert (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Boss Ruten (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ruten has a pretty significant injury - he really shouldn't be fighting right now but he's a warrior and he's here none the less! Boss Ruten looks lathargic as he enters the arena. Wake up son, you're about to have a fight!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Halpert darts in and clinches Ruten up against the cage. Ruten looks gassed! Ruten being controlled against the cage. Halpert drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Halpert manages to pull guard.
Ruten postures up.
Ruten drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Halpert dives on top into guard. Halpert loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Halpert drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Halpert jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Halpert showing good wrestling skills to control the position. Halpert wants to control from the top but Ruten keeps moving. Halpert thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Halpert swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Halpert closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Halpert lands in his opponent's guard. Halpert trying to control but Ruten is working from the bottom.

Halpert sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Ruten's guard. Ruten is trying to control but can't.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Ruten has one foot on Halpert's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet. Halpert fails with a takedown attempt. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Halpert tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ruten throws a left and a right that both miss
and Halpert cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Halpert misses with a head kick.
Good shot there by Ruten. Halpert closes the distance and clinches. Ruten fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Ruten pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Ruten misses with a two punch combination.
Ruten doesn't succeed with the takedown and Halpert counters with a series of strikes. Ruten will be more careful next time no doubt. Jim Halpert has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Boss Ruten. Ruten slips a jab and a cross from Halpert.
Halpert throws a combination that misses and Ruten counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body. Ruten is looking to clinch. Jim Halpert seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Ruten tries to clinch but Halpert is having none of it. Ruten takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. A shot to the body from Halpert misses and Ruten counters with a two punch combo. Ruten feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Halpert has his foot on Ruten's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Ruten works his way back into a safe position though. Ruten postures up.
Halpert is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Ruten is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Halpert throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Halpert is working an open guard so Ruten takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. Halpert is looking to clinch. Ruten slips a jab and a cross from Halpert.
Ruten throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Halpert. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jim Halpert dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Ruten takes the fight into the clinch. Halpert lands a shoulder strike. Ruten wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee. Halpert fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Halpert ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Halpert no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard. Halpert lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Ruten! Halpert controlling from the full mount. Halpert stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Ruten gets caught flat footed, as Halpert shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Halpert tries to free his leg and advance position but Ruten is retaining full guard. Ruten looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Ruten keeping full guard, as Halpert tries to pass. Halpert passes Ruten's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Ruten tries to roll over but Halpert keeps him under control. Halpert with the ground and pound but Ruten uses the opportunity to regain guard. Halpert passes easily into side control. Nice work. Ruten is looking for a sweep.
That's three minutes gone in the round. You can see the frustration on Ruten's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Halpert is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Ruten knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Ruten tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Halpert wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Halpert takes a swing at Ruten's ribcage but misses. Halpert scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Halpert wants to control but Ruten is keeping him busy. Ruten tries to escape but Halpert is in control. Ruten tries to bench press Halpert off him but Halpert keeps the position. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Halpert wants to lay and pray for a moment but Ruten keeps working.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Halpert tries to bum rush Ruten with a series of wild strikes but Ruten uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Ruten tries to clinch but Halpert is having none of it. Halpert tries for a takedown but Ruten circles away easily and Ruten makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range. Ruten is looking to clinch but Halpert is avoiding it.
Halpert throws a nice looking combination but Ruten bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Jim Halpert is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Halpert throws a lazy body kick and Ruten counters with a nice leg kick. Ruten lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent. Halpert keeps the fight on the outside.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Ruten tries to clinch but fails miserably and Halpert counters with a stiff right hand. Ruten fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Halpert throws a body punch but Ruten moves out of range. Halpert closes the distance looking to clinch and Ruten counters with a shoot takedown. Halpert fights it but they end up in guard. Halpert is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Ruten has his hands clasped together but Halpert extends an breaks Ruten's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Halpert.
