PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between John Deurell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Van Kelly (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Deurell might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Africa. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, John Deurell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Van Kelly!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Frank Dennis and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kelly stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Kelly wants it to stay on the feet.
Kelly steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Deurell.
Kelly misses with a takedown
enabling Deurell to counter with a crisp jab.

Kelly drives through with a takedown into guard.
Deurell is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Kelly is looking to work some ground and pound but Deurell has wrist control.

Deurell escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kelly gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Kelly throwing strikes from guard but Deurell blocks nicely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kelly is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

Kelly got a little sloppy there for a moment and Deurell has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Kelly has managed to get both his arms back between Deurell's legs - danger averted.

Deurell is looking for a triangle but Kelly pushes his legs off easily.

Deurell might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Kelly makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Kelly postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Kelly postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Deurell is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Kelly postures up and lands a big shot to Deurell's brow.
Kelly with a flurry of punches that miss.
Deurell is adopting a defensive guard.
Deurell has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Kelly stands up over Deurell, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Deurell tries to strike from the bottom.
Deurell has control of Kelly's left arm, preventing Kelly from doing any damage.
Kelly lands a couple of decent looking shots.

Kelly keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Deurell's head.

Kelly is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Deurell looking to hit a scissor sweep but Kelly is one step ahead there.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Deurell has momentary wrist control but Kelly slips an elbow through the middle.
Deurell trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.
Kelly preventing the sweep.
Kelly tries to free his leg and advance position but Deurell is retaining full guard.
Deurell has a closed guard, preventing Kelly from standing up.
Kelly trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Deurell is looking for a triangle but Kelly pushes his legs off easily.

Both fighters have adopted an aggressive gameplan on the ground!
Deurell manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Kelly manages to get himself to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Van Kelly dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Kelly has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Deurell regains guard immediately.

Kelly has his foot on Deurell's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Deurell works his way back into a safe position though.

Kelly is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Deurell rolls with it to try and escape but Kelly cranks on the arm and Deurell is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Van Kelly!
A victorious Van Kelly thanked his army of followers in his post fight interview, telling people to make sure they follow him on Twitter.
John Deurell was interviewed post fight and said 'I pity da foo' dat got lucky against me!'.
