Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
35 - 16 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Garik Harlamov! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
29 - 15 - 0, fighting out of London, Jack Calypso! The judges for this bout are Dmitry Maklakov, Vladimir Khabensky and Sergei Dronov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Harlamov looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Calypso is fending him off so far but Harlamov persists. Nope, Calypso circles away and we're back to standing. Harlamov misses with a looping right. Calypso on the wrong end of a nice jab. Harlamov throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Calypso changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt. Harlamov shoots for a double leg takedown but Calypso sprawls well. He's pushed Harlamov's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Calypso waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Harlamov. Harlamov has a takedown stuffed. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Garik Harlamov. That's going to take a lot out of him. A jab lands there for Harlamov. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. A telegraphed right hand from Harlamov misses the target. Calypso changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt. Harlamov connects with a single shot there. Harlamov ducks under a wild hook from Calypso. Harlamov looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Calypso drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Harlamov has his foot on Calypso's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Calypso works his way back into a safe position though. Harlamov might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Calypso passes easily into side control. Nice work. Harlamov tries to get back to half guard but can't. Calypso is putting a hurting on Harlamov here, landing some big shots from side control. Calypso in side control lands a decent elbow. Harlamov gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there! The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Calypso prevents Harlamov from getting the reversal. Calypso lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Harlamov hang on? We've been hearing good reports from Harlamov's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Calypso trying to control but he's not successful this time. Harlamov is working to get back to half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Harlamov wants to hold on but Calypso pushes him away. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Harlamov slips a leg in and gets back to half guard. Calypso looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Harlamov is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Calypso pulls his head out easily. Harlamov is refusing to be controlled, as Calypso sits in half guard. Harlamov is trying to control but can't.
Calypso has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Calypso can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Harlamov is looking to escape. Calypso might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Harlamov haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
That's three minutes gone in the round. The referee warns Harlamov that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Harlamov is looking to get to half guard. Calypso looking to secure an arm triangle but Harlamov defends it well. Harlamov is trying desperately to improve position. Harlamov is working hard here to advance position. Calypso trying to control but Harlamov is having none of it. Calypso pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Calypso can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Harlamov is looking to escape. Calypso avoids the attempt from Harlamov to control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Harlamov manages to regain half guard. Good work. Calypso has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Harlamov is not content to let Calypso control the position. Harlamov is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Calypso pulls his head out easily. Harlamov looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Calypso passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Harlamov! Calypso with the ground and pound from mount. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jack Calypso dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Harlamov ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Calypso lands with a hook. Harlamov tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head. Jack Calypso seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Nice uppercut lands for Harlamov. That snapped Calypso's head back.
Harlamov missing with a left hand there. Calypso was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Harlamov looks to land a left hand but Calypso moved out of range nicely. Harlamov shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Calypso as he avoids it easily. Calypso staying out of range there. Calypso takes one on the button. A swing and a miss from Calypso. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Harlamov scores with a takedown into Calypso's guard. Harlamov won't allow Calypso to sweep him here. Harlamov postures up.
Calypso is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Harlamov has his hands clasped together but Calypso extends and breaks Harlamov's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Calypso.
