The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Contreiras shoots in for a double leg but Martinez sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Tony Martinez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Martinez gets caught flat footed, as Contreiras shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. Contreiras stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Martinez swivels though and keeps the full guard. Contreiras is fighting to break Martinez's control of his arms but Martinez is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Let's hope that Martinez has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Contreiras pushing down on Martinez's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Martinez is concentrating on defense, preventing Contreiras from advancing position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Martinez avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Contreiras. Contreiras trying to control the action but Martinez is working from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Contreiras prevents Martinez from improving his position. Contreiras thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Martinez's head. Contreiras decides to stand and escape the position. Martinez misses the body punch and Contreiras counters with a one-two to the body. Martinez feints and as Contreiras raises his hands in defense, Martinez changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Contreiras has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Martinez should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Contreiras has tightened it up now! Martinez should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Julio Contreiras!
