Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
14 - 8 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Carl Sheppards! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Pat Stay! The judges for this bout are Ivan Kurochkin, Dmitry Maklakov and Valeri Chadov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Stay throws a head kick that misses. A jab from Sheppards misses. Stay ducks down and throws a hook to the body. Pat Stay seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Stay throws a right and a left that both miss. Sheppards avoids the head kick by Stay.
Stay falls off balance throwing a combination
and Sheppards connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Sheppards throws a shot from downtown. Stay moves away and avoids it. Stay lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Stay. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. A thudding body kick lands there by Stay!
A head kick misses from Stay. Stay buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Sheppards misses with an uppercut. Stay saw that one coming. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Some wild striking there from Stay.
Sheppards was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sheppards moves out of range of the body kick from Stay.
Sheppards swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect. Stay misses with a right hand enabling Sheppards to counter with a crisp jab. A solid body kick from Stay. Stay scores with a leg kick.
Stay throws a left and a right that both miss
and Sheppards counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. A punch combination from Stay misses. We've been told by Sheppards's head coaches at St Petersburg MMA Gym that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight. Sheppards digs a good hook to Stay's body.
Stay moves out of range as Sheppards strikes. Jab, jab by Sheppards - just one landing. Sheppards displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Stay throws out the jab. Sheppards cracks Stay with a big right hand and Stay goes down!
Stay is rocked!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Sheppards forces his way into half guard. Stay is still in real trouble! Can Sheppards finish him? Sheppards moves nicely into side control. Sheppards will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Sheppards is staying tight to Stay's torso, preventing him from escaping. Sheppards in side control, working for a kimura. He's got hold of an arm and he's torquing it... Stay is tapping! That's the end of the fight!
