Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 9 - 0, fighting out of New York, James Bergen! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
8 - 10 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gab Batista! The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Jorge Garcia and David Schapiro.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Bergen avoids the head kick by Batista.
Bergen seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter. That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Bergen crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Batista - the referee stops the clock and Bergen gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Batista. Bergen manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes. Batista with a body punch. A glancing blow. Batista thuds a left hand into Bergen's body. Batista fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Bergen drops down looking for a counter takedown but Batista sprawls and moves away. Decent striking displayed by Batista there. Horrible takedown attempt by Batista or perhaps it was just good defense by Bergen, which made it look bad. Batista scores with a head kick.
Bergen could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Bergen blocks a head kick by Batista.
Bergen is looking to clinch but Batista is avoiding it.
Batista fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Bergen sprawls well initially but Batista persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Batista in particular looking to stall.
That's one minute gone in the round. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Batista is looking for a kimura but Bergen is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Batista to get the leverage. Batista passes the guard and advances to mount! Batista working away from the top, dropping strikes. Bergen is flailing around, obviously not happy about being mounted. Batista locks hold of one of his arms and spins for an armbar. He's got it! Bergen is forced to tap!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:51 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Gab Batista! Gab Batista seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
