Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 4 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
20 - 13 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Nick Alvarez! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Slower Poke! The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Seu Braga and Emerson Jorge.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Alvarez looks for a takedown but Poke sprawls well. A momentary lapse in concentration from Poke enables Alvarez to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Poke manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Poke throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land. Alvarez slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Poke looking to hit a scissor sweep but Alvarez is one step ahead there. Alvarez is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Alvarez passes into half guard under a barage of strikes.
That's one minute gone in the round. Alvarez with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Alvarez has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Poke is looking to improve his position.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Alvarez waves his right hand out in front of him, looking to distract Poke. Oh, he's unloaded a beast of a left hand - it worked! He's dropped Poke to the canvas! Can he finish him!?
It looks like Slower Poke has been cut. Alvarez thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Poke can do anything to dispel that myth. Poke throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Poke can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Alvarez controls the pace.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Poke striking off his back but it's not causing Alvarez any problems. Alvarez slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Poke thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage. Poke wants to sweep but no luck. Alvarez is stalling in the full guard.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Poke stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Poke wants it to stay on the feet. Alvarez fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Poke checks it well. Alvarez shoots in for a takedown but Poke shows good takedown defense. Poke drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Alvarez defends it well. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nick Alvarez. That's going to take a lot out of him. Alvarez drives through and clinches with Poke against the cage.
That's three minutes gone in the round. The referee is keeping an eye on Alvarez - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Alvarez manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back. Alvarez working for a triangle but Poke defends it easily.

Poke stands up over his opponent, looking to dive in with a big punch. Here he comes, superman style! Oh, the punch misses and Alvarez has got him in a triangle choke for good measure! Oh no! Poke manages to get his head free but now Alvarez has transitioned to an armbar! Poke grimaces and is forced to tap! Beautiful Jiu Jitsu from Alvarez! I'd be surprised if that didn't end up as submission of the night!
