Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Xander Graves! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Tim Thomas! The judges for this bout are Bart Greer, Sandra Marshall and Daniel Franklin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Thomas tries to clinch but Graves is having none of it. Graves attempts a counter takedown but Thomas avoids it well and moves away. Thomas pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Thomas moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination. Nice straight punches there by Thomas. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Thomas. Thomas tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Graves appears to be looking for a counter takedown. A punch combination from Thomas misses. Graves changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. Thomas swings widly with a right hand
and Graves decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Thomas's guard. Thomas keeping moving, preventing Graves from controlling successfully. Thomas has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at All Time Wrestling - 12 ELITE COACHES. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one. Thomas not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Graves trying to control but Thomas is working from the bottom. Graves working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
That's one minute gone in the round. Graves is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Graves scores with a decent looking elbow strike. Thomas working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Graves. Thomas pulls Graves in close to prevent any damage. Thomas looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Graves trying to control but Thomas is working from the bottom.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Graves closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Graves lands in his opponent's guard. Thomas trying to control the position here.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Graves tries to free his leg and advance position but Thomas is retaining full guard. Graves trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Thomas can do anything to dispel that myth. Graves drops back looking for a leg! Thomas is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Thomas manages to kick Graves off! Graves jumps back into Thomas's guard. Graves loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Graves looking to pass the guard. Graves drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Thomas manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Graves has Thomas in his guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Thomas trying to stand up but can't free himself from Graves's guard. Graves is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Graves avoids a lazy jab quite easily. Tim Thomas seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Thomas fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done. Thomas throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Thomas scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business. Thomas misses with a hook. Graves appears to be looking for a counter takedown. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Tim Thomas is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. A combination from Graves does no damage. Graves misses with a wild combination.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Thomas throws a body kick that digs right into the meat. Graves is breathing heavily. Graves checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time. Thomas misses with a leg kick. An inside leg kick from Thomas misses. Thomas ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent. Graves uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Thomas. Graves seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance. Thomas misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Thomas lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Thomas throws a chopping leg kick but Graves manages to avoid taking any serious damage. Thomas stuns Graves with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range. Graves misses with a few strikes there.
Graves displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Thomas throws out the jab. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Tim Thomas dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Thomas throws a hook but Graves avoids it easily. Thomas has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Thomas tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Graves paws at him with a jab and circles away. Tim Thomas seems to be getting the better of the standup. A jab from Thomas misses. Thomas closes the distance and pushes Graves back into the cage. Thomas lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage. Our sources have told us that Graves has been working on his knees in the buildup to the fight. Thomas breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. A looping hook to the body misses from Thomas. Graves does a little dance to reset his feet. Graves takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming. Thomas connects with a crisp jab. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Thomas cracks Graves with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business. Graves takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Graves is rocked! Thomas lands an uppercut, right on the button! Graves tumbles backwards into the cage, staring vacantly into space! He's got no idea where he is, who he is or what day it is... Poor guy.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Tim Thomas!
