PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Orville Weiss (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lenny Smalls (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Lenny Smalls was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Orville Weiss!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Lenny Smalls!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Shigeki Sano and Hirohito Nitta.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A head kick misses from Smalls.
Weiss tries to counter with a takedown but Smalls is quick to defend against it.

Weiss moves into the clinch.
Weiss is working Smalls over against the cage.
Smalls gets underhooks to prevent Weiss's takedown attempt.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.

Smalls manages to pull guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Weiss is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Smalls lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.
Smalls must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Lenny Smalls seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

and Weiss counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Smalls has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Weiss is trying to keep an underhook but Smalls manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Weiss has one foot on Smalls's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Weiss has not gone for a single takedown so far in this fight, which seems like a very strange tactic when you consider that he has the superior wrestling and BJJ.

Weiss is looking to clinch but Smalls is avoiding it.

Smalls closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Smalls lands in his opponent's guard.

Smalls postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Weiss is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Smalls, into his guard.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Weiss throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Smalls works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

A close second round but Lenny Smalls will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!



Smalls feints and as Weiss raises his hands in defense, Smalls changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Weiss scrambles and gets back to his feet.

Smalls fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Weiss sprawls well initially but Smalls persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Weiss manages to escape and get back to his feet!

Weiss gets in close and instigates a clinch.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Smalls is fighting off a takedown attempt but Weiss is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Smalls to the mat. Smalls regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Weiss makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Weiss accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Weiss has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Smalls has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.
