Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jimmy Trotter! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Roddy Banks! The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Paul Gruel and Jeff Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Banks closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Banks lands in his opponent's guard. Trotter has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Banks can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Banks is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Banks drops back looking for a leg! Trotter is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Trotter manages to kick Banks off! Banks jumps back into Trotter's guard. Trotter pulls Banks in close to his closed guard and prevents Banks from doing any damage or advancing position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Banks pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Trotter is keeping the position for now.
That's one minute gone in the round. Trotter has control of Banks's left arm, preventing Banks from doing any damage. Banks has gone for a leg lock! Trotter slips out almost immediately though and dives into Banks's guard. Trotter seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Trotter fails with the takedown and Banks cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Trotter shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Banks as he jumps to the side. Trotter stuffs the takedown.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Banks looking to score a takedown here. Trotter is defending well but Banks drives through and ends up in Trotter's guard. Banks postures up in Trotter's guard and throws a big left but Trotter blocks it. Banks throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Trotter works some decent striking defense from the bottom. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Banks accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Trotter on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Trotter tries to get out of the position. Trotter has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. Banks stands and throws Trotter's legs to the side, diving into side control. Trotter tries to bench press Banks off him but Banks keeps the position. Banks is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Trotter is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Banks is trying to get an arm triangle but Trotter is defending well.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Banks wants to stand but Trotter is controlling his arm. Trotter is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Banks swings around for an armbar but Trotter sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Banks's guard. Trotter slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Banks looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Trotter content to stall in guard here.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Trotter stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Trotter wants it to stay on the feet. Trotter tries to counter with a takedown but Banks is quick to defend against it. Banks closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Banks has Trotter pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Trotter manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing. Jimmy Trotter has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Roddy Banks. Banks looks winded! Banks tries to stall but Trotter uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Banks tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked. I was talking to Trotter's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight. Trotter has clasped his hands together around Banks's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done. Trotter working the head and body with strikes. Banks is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Trotter tries to stand but Banks is controlling his head. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Trotter lands a decent elbow from side control. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Roddy Banks dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Banks instigates a clinch. Trotter prevents a takedown attempt there.
Banks has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Banks is looking to control Trotter's arms but Trotter gets an underhook and turns him. Now Banks has his back to the cage. Banks turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control! Who's going to make the next move? Banks is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Trotter has escaped the position, nice work there. Trotter is trying to improve his position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Banks is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Trotter looks calm but he's in trouble here. Banks gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Trotter is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Banks lets go of the hold and Trotter can pop his arm back in it's socket.
