PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Nelson Malone (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Bates (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jon Bates will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Nelson Malone!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Jon Bates!
The judges for this bout are Phil Schofield, William Gold and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bates tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Bates tries for a takedown but Malone sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Bates moves into range and clinches up with Malone.
Bates wants to break free but Malone has control.

Malone pulls guard effortlessly.
Malone really is a fat lump.
Bates in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Bates slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Malone wants to stand but Bates is controlling the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Bates stands and steps away. Malone gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Bates takes the fight into the clinch.
Bates is trying to drag Malone to the mat but Malone just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Bates fails to pull guard.
Nelson Malone has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jon Bates.

Bates breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Bates stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Bates wants it to stay on the feet.
Bates pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Bates shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Malone but Malone pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Bates shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Malone pinned against the cage. Malone gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Malone tries to keep at a distance but Bates has taken the fight into the clinch.
Bates is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Malone pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Bates goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Bates tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Bates is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Malone is defending well.
Malone prevents Bates from breaking the clinch.
Malone is trying to pull guard but Bates turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Bates is working for takedown but Malone is calmly controlling the position for now.
Malone tries for a takedown. No joy.
Bates goes for a takedown attempt but Malone pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Horrible takedown attempt by Malone or perhaps it was just good defense by Bates, which made it look bad.

Bates forces Malone back against the cage and clinches.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Bates is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Malone is keeping busy.
Bates tries to pull guard but Malone holds him up against the cage and eventually Bates drops back down to his feet.
Bates taking a breather.
Bates has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Malone after a bit of a struggle.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Bates wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Malone has him pressed against the cage.
Bates gets underhooks to prevent Malone's takedown attempt.
Malone is working for takedown but Bates is calmly controlling the position for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jon Bates dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Malone throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Bates's waist but Bates gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Malone off to one side.
A head kick misses from Bates.

Bates closes the distance and clinches.
Bates jumps guard but Malone stands there with Bates around his waist. Bates gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Malone breaks the clinch.

Bates gets caught napping as Malone dives in and scores a takedown. Bates manages to retain guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Malone preventing the sweep.
Malone might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Bates pushes Malone off and scrambles back to his feet.
Malone looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Bates is fending him off so far but Malone persists. Nope, Bates circles away and we're back to standing.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Bates gets a clinch.
Bates jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Malone walks away with a smile on his face. Bates gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Bates clinches.

Bates pulls guard successfully.
Malone showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Malone wants to get up but he can't break Bates's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Bates is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Malone controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Bates working a defensive guard but Malone manages to pass into side control anyway.
Bates is looking for a sweep.
A lull in the action here.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Bates throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Bates clinches.
Bates with an attempt at a knee that misses.
Malone has Bates pressed against the cage, preventing Bates from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Malone dodges an elbow strike from Bates.
A battle for position here, against the cage.
Bates doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
Bates tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Malone smiles and moves away.
Nelson Malone has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jon Bates.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Bates shoots in for a double leg but Malone sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Malone tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Bates manages to circle out of the way.
Bates misses with a body shot.
Bates shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Malone but Malone pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Bates is breathing heavily.

Bates clinches up against the cage.

Malone fails to pull guard.
Bates has Malone pushed against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jon Bates showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Malone shoots for a double leg takedown but Bates sprawls well. He's pushed Malone's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

and Malone counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Malone.

Malone breaks from the clinch.
Bates displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Malone.
Bates closes this distance looking for a takedown but Malone circles away.

Malone shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Malone performing his best blanket impression for a moment.

Bates tries to get to full guard but Malone has control of the leg.
Malone keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Malone missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Bates throws a body shot but no joy.
Bates slaps away a takedown attempt from Malone, before circling back to the center of the mat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nelson Malone. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Bates dives in for a single leg takedown but Malone sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Malone fails in his attempt to clinch.

Bates tries to sprawl but Malone drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Malone perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Bates tries to get to full guard but Malone has control of the leg.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Bates is trying to get back to full guard.
Bates preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Malone drops an elbow to the side of Bates's head.
Bates moves into full guard.
Bates has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Malone distracts Bates with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Bates misses with a body shot.

Bates gets a clinch.

Malone's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Bates has taken the fight to the clinch.
Bates tries to pull guard but Malone forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Jon Bates seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.
Malone fails to pull guard.
Bates drops down looking for an ankle pick but Malone pulls his leg out and moves away.
Bates takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Malone feints and as Bates raises his hands in defense, Malone changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Nelson Malone showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Bates has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
