Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dean Mason! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, George St Pierre! The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Arvi Lind and Anni Minnemäki.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mason with a jab. St Pierre shoots in for a double leg but Mason sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Mason quickly followed up with a counter body kick but doesn't connect. St Pierre fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Mason to the ground. St Pierre is now in Mason's guard. St Pierre throws a strike but Mason rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Mason slips nicely into half guard. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Mason in particular looking to stall. St Pierre is staying active underneath Mason, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Mason has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mason sitting and controlling from the half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mason stops St Pierre from getting back to his feet.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if St Pierre can do anything to dispel that myth. Mason stalling. Mason wants to take a breather but St Pierre is having none of it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Mason takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. St Pierre is trying to stand.
Mason seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. St Pierre wants to stand back up but Mason manages to pass into side control.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
That's three minutes gone in the round. A lazy left from Mason finds it's target.
It looks like George St Pierre has been cut. St Pierre shoots in but Mason avoids the takedown attempt easily. St Pierre fails with the takedown letting Mason counter with a right hand. Dean Mason has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of George St Pierre. St Pierre tries for a takedown but Mason circles away easily and Mason makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. St Pierre really felt that one! St Pierre gets the takedown into side control. The strikes coming from St Pierre are missing the target in this wave of attacks. St Pierre throws an elbow but Mason slips to the side and avoids it well. St Pierre grinds an elbow into Mason's temple. Mason sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Mason taking some punishment here, with St Pierre in his half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. St Pierre throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Mason to regain full guard. Mason has St Pierre pulled in close to control his posture. St Pierre is looking to work some ground and pound but Mason has wrist control. Hammerfist, elbow! yells St Pierre's corner. There ya go! There ya go! A big thud reverberates around the arena there as St Pierre accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. St Pierre is looking to work some ground and pound but Mason has wrist control. St Pierre postures up in Mason's guard and throws a big left but Mason blocks it. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Mason is trying to keep St Pierre in close.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. St Pierre misses with a takedown and Mason counters with a right hand to the body. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! St Pierre fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Mason is looking to counter with a body kick. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Dean Mason dominated that round. The cut man is working on George St Pierre's cut. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
St Pierre misses with a takedown attempt - Mason sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Good exchange - Mason coming out on top. St Pierre wants to clinch. St Pierre goes for a double leg but Mason avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Mason continues to drive forward. Mason stalks St Pierre and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into St Pierre's face. St Pierre staggers backwards, shaken. St Pierre looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Nice uppercut there from Mason. Oooooh!!! Mason has knocked St Pierre down with a huge combo! Mason steps away and waves a wobbly St Pierre back to his feet! This one might not go much longer!
St Pierre is rocked! The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Mason is looking for an opening here. He's unloaded a big left hand that catches St Pierre flush on the jaw and sends him tumbling to the canvas! St Pierre is out cold! Mason holds back from landing any unnecessary shots to his unconscious opponent, as the referee reacts slowly to the situation. A brutal knockout and then some excellent sportsmanship - this guy is my new favorite fighter!
