Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
40 - 14 - 1, fighting out of London, Suren Nazarethyan! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
35 - 16 - 0, fighting out of New York, Darwin France! The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Alyssa Summers and Russell Pearce.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! France checks a low kick from Nazarethyan. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that France has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. France looking to score a takedown here. Nazarethyan is defending well but France drives through and ends up in Nazarethyan's guard. France trying to control the position from guard on top but Nazarethyan is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. France throwing strikes but missing. France with a flurry of punches that miss. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Nazarethyan wants to sweep here but France controlling him for the moment. France looking to sit in guard and control but Nazarethyan gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Nazarethyan throws a big elbow that misses.
That's one minute gone in the round. Nazarethyan trying to control but France is working from the bottom. France is looking for a triangle but Nazarethyan pushes his legs off easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Nazarethyan is stalling in the full guard. France is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Nazarethyan wants to control from the top but France keeps moving. Nazarethyan is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. Nazarethyan advances to half guard. France gets back to full guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Nazarethyan stands over his opponent and dives in with a flying punch! France throws up his legs and catches Nazarethyan in a triangle! Oh this looks tight! Nazarethyan tries to escape but he's forced to tap! Wow, fantastic work there by France! That came out of nowhere!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:23 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Darwin France! Darwin France seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
