Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Kenton Okunaba! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Elenor Carpenter! The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Josh West and Ryoma Takatsuka.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A solid leg kick lands there for Okunaba.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Carpenter has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Carpenter gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Okunaba counters with a nice right hand that sends Carpenter toppling to the canvas! Carpenter scrambles and gets back to his feet - can Okunaba finish him?!
It looks like Elenor Carpenter has been cut. Carpenter keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Okunaba tries a head kick but it misses.
Okunaba cracks Carpenter with a big right hand that sends him to the floor! Carpenter looks wobbly but he's sprung back up to his feet straight away… can Okunaba finish him?
Carpenter is rocked! The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Carpenter on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot. Carpenter is still on wobbly legs! Can Okunaba finish him? Okunaba changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. Carpenter seems to have recovered his senses. Okunaba fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Carpenter manages to avoid it. Okunaba lands with a nice body kick. Okunaba cracks Carpenter with a big right hand that sends him to the floor! Carpenter looks wobbly but he's sprung back up to his feet straight away… can Okunaba finish him?
Sloppy strikes from Okunaba. Those never looked like landing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Carpenter wants to clinch. Okunaba with a nice cross. Okunaba throws a monster overhand right that drops Carpenter! Okunaba follows up with more strikes from mount and the fight is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:43 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Kenton Okunaba! Kenton Okunaba retains his heavyweight title! Kenton Okunaba seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
