PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Paha Hemmo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and The Beast (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Paha Hemmo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, The Beast!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Beast shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Hemmo manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Beast controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Hemmo escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Beast gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Beast wants to pass the guard but Hemmo is keeping the position.
Hemmo not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Beast trying to control but Hemmo is working from the bottom.

Hemmo is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Beast is aware though and is defending well.
Hemmo tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Beast shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Hemmo pinned against the cage. Hemmo gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Hemmo fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Beast manages to avoid it.

Beast shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Hemmo is trying to defend but Beast finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Beast seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Hemmo does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Beast is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Hemmo sees it coming and defends easily.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Beast is trying to work for a kimura but Hemmo is defending well.

Hemmo is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Beast's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Beast's back!

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Beast wants to escape the position.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Beast rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.

Beast has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Hemmo is working away from the top position though.

Beast shoots in but no luck this time.
Beast lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Beast moves out of range as Hemmo strikes.

Beast looking to score a takedown here. Hemmo is defending well but Beast drives through and ends up in Hemmo's guard.

Hemmo has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Beast can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Hemmo swings for the body but Beast moves out of range.
Beast dives in and grabs Hemmo's left leg, looking for a takedown. Hemmo pushes down on Beast's head and hops out.
Hemmo stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Hemmo wants it to stay on the feet.
Paha Hemmo has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of The Beast.

Hemmo went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Beast shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Hemmo as he jumps to the side.

Beast gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Hemmo to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Beast closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Hemmo is staying active underneath Beast, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
The Beast has got the better of the ground game so far.

Beast is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Hemmo is just riding it out for now. Beast eventually gives up the hold.

That was a close second round but I would say that Paha Hemmo will probably get the nod.

Beast tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Hemmo swivels and escapes.
Hemmo swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect.

Beast shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Hemmo as he avoids it easily.

Beast drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Hemmo manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Beast has Hemmo in his guard.

Hemmo postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Beast holds on and takes a little breather.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Hemmo throws a right and a left that Beast avoids nicely.

Beast gets the takedown into side control.

Beast goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Hemmo has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Beast but great work by Hemmo.

Hemmo wants to lay and pray for a moment but Beast keeps working.
Hemmo scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Beast to see if he's OK.

Hemmo is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Beast is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Beast takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Hemmo trying to control the action but Beast is working from the bottom.
Hemmo working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Beast is trying to control Hemmo's posture but Hemmo avoids it.

Paha Hemmo is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Beast tries to improve position but can't.
Beast is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Hemmo off and has taken his back!

Beast is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Hemmo has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.
My spies in The Beast inform me that Beast has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Hemmo, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
