PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Clint Hill (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mason Gates (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Clint Hill has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 1, fighting out of London, Clint Hill!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Mason Gates!
The judges for this bout are Donald Grub, Paul Tew and Phil Schofield.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gates bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Gates goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Hill has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Gates but great work by Hill.
Hill really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Hill lands a few punches from side control.
Gates is looking for a sweep.

Hill decides to stand back up. Hill steps back and let's Gates get back to his feet.

Hill gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gates stops Hill from standing up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hill has his hands on Gates's head, controlling the position.
Hill has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gates wants to control from the top but Hill keeps moving.
Gates is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Hill wants to stand and escape but Gates is having none of it.
Gates wants to pass the guard but Hill is keeping the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Gates wants to control from the top but Hill keeps moving.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Gates stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hill swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Gates takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Gates throws a head kick but Hill moves out of range.

Gates feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Gates looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Hill has a closed guard, preventing Gates from standing up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gates is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Hill pulls Gates in close to prevent any damage.
Gates seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Gates looking to sit in guard and control but Hill gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Gates pushes Hill off and gets back to his feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Gates closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Hill's guard.
Gates is standing up over Hill. Hill looks to escape but Gates dives into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mason Gates dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Hill swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Gates throws out a counter right but Hill avoids it with no problem.

Gates scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Gates postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gates is looking to take a break and control but Hill is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Gates tries to advance to mount but can't.
Hill tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Gates wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Hill moves out of range of the body kick from Gates.
Hill half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Hill throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Gates closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Hill tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Gates avoids it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Gates has hold of one of Hill's legs. Hill is fighting the takedown attempt but Gates gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Gates not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Hill preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Gates must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Gates postures up.
Gates is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Hill wants to get back to his feet but Gates is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Gates stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hill swivels though and keeps the full guard.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Hill looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Gates tries a head kick but it misses.
Hill drops down looking for a counter takedown but Gates sprawls and moves away.
Hill misses with a low kick.

Gates drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Gates looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Hill is trying to improve his position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Gates tries for a kimura but Hill is defending well.
Gates trying to control the action but Hill is working from the bottom.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Gates is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mason Gates showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!



Gates rushes Hill and presses him up against the cage.
Hill avoids a wild elbow strike from Gates.

Hill is fighting off a takedown attempt but Gates is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Hill to the mat. Hill regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Gates seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Gates has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Hill wants to get up but he can't break Gates's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Gates manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
Hill tries to pull guard but Gates forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Hill pulls guard successfully.
Gates sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Hill thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Gates not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Hill not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Hill will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Gates wants to control from the top but Hill keeps moving.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Hill has Gates up against the cage in a clinch.

Gates pulls Hill into guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gates is on top in guard.
Gates works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Gates tries to pass to full mount but Hill defends it.
Gates is figuring out what he wants to do next.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Gates is looking to advance position but Hill won't allow it.
Gates tries to stand but can't do so whilst Hill controls his leg.

Clint Hill has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Mason Gates is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

I've got Gates winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
