0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joenel Japson! The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, Jonathan Paton and Columbo Gatti.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Japson pulls out of a head kick attempt.
A head kick misses from Haynes. Haynes sets himself, and Japson steps forward looking for the clinch! Haynes avoids it this time. Japson closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Haynes's guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Haynes wants to hit a switch here but Japson passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Haynes there! Haynes keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Japson throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Haynes because Japson loaded up on that one. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Haynes tries to hold on but Japson postures up. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Japson content just to control the position here. Haynes is desperately trying to improve his position but Japson has a good base and remains in mount. Haynes really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Haynes attempts a counter takedown but Japson avoids it well and moves away. Japson misses with a takedown attempt - Haynes sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Japson is breathing heavily. Japson fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

That's two minutes gone in the round. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Japson is defended easily by Haynes. Haynes is looking to counter with a shot to the body. Japson tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Haynes defends well and Japson ends up having to push Haynes into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Haynes was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit. Haynes ducks under a wild hook from Japson. Joenel Japson is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Haynes defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Japson. Haynes shoots in for a takedown but Japson shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Japson doesn't succeed with the takedown enabling Haynes to counter with a crisp jab.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Japson stuffs the takedown attempt from Haynes. Haynes gets slowly back to his feet. Japson darts in and clinches Haynes up against the cage. Haynes breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Japson misses with a takedown attempt and Haynes holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch. Japson is trying to force a seperation but Haynes has the dominant position. Japson is trying to drag Haynes to the mat but Haynes just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there. Haynes wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Haynes displaying some good clinch control by pressing Japson up against the cage. Haynes's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Haynes throws a nice head kick!

Japson throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Japson looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Japson wants to pass the guard but Haynes is defending well. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Japson controlling the action here.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Japson shoots for a double leg takedown but Haynes sprawls well. He's pushed Japson's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Haynes seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance. Nice takedown defense from Japson. No joy for Haynes on that attempt.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Japson is trying hard to land a takedown here. Haynes sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Rolland Haynes has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Joenel Japson. Japson takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Japson shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Haynes counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Haynes. Haynes breaks the clinch.

Japson is trying to push Haynes away but Haynes has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere. Haynes manages to break the clinch.
Japson goes for a double leg but Haynes avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Haynes continues to drive forward. Japson throws a head kick that misses. Haynes is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Japson.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Haynes cracks the inside of Japson's front leg. Haynes throws a looping overhand right but Japson ducks down to avoid it. Japson steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Haynes. Haynes throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Jab, jab by Haynes - just one landing. Japson tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Haynes swivels and escapes. Japson fails miserably with a takedown attempt. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Japson defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Haynes. Japson fails miserably with a takedown attempt. An attempted straight right counter from Haynes misses the target.
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Rolland Haynes. I think Haynes has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
