Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Kobe Kage! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Georges Hughes! The judges for this bout are Michael Johnstone, Bart Greer and Santiago Holmes.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kage swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target. Hughes throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Kage checks a leg kick. Hughes closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Kage's guard. Hughes postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Kage working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Hughes. Hughes won't allow Kage to sweep him here. Hughes is in close to Kage's body, working some short punches and elbows. Kage not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Hughes with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Hughes looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Hughes pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Kage is keeping the position for now. Kage tries to land a sweep but no joy. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Hughes drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Kage dives on top into guard. Kage trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Kage works over Hughes with some ground and pound from guard. Kage landing with the ground and pound. Kage wants to control from the top but Hughes keeps moving.
That's one minute gone in the round. We've been hearing that Kage has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish. Hughes looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Hughes throws his legs up looking for a submission but Kage uses it to pass to side control.
Kage is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Hughes has escaped the position, nice work there. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Hughes is trying to get back to half guard. Hughes takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Kage thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Kage lands an elbow. Kage is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Hughes is trying to escape and Kage transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Hughes is forced to tap! Nice work there by Kage! Very nice indeed!
