Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jayne Reynolds ! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Erik McCarthy! The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, and Don Winkell.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! McCarthy slips a straight right by Reynolds . Reynolds pushing out the jab but it's not landing. McCarthy tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away. McCarthy misses with the combination.
McCarthy will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Reynolds closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Reynolds tries to break free but McCarthy pushes him back against the cage. Reynolds stalls. Reynolds escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Reynolds throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. McCarthy is looking for the big counter here. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Reynolds throws a hook to the side of McCarthy's head but McCarthy sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. McCarthy takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily. Reynolds lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but McCarthy circles away quickly and effectively. Reynolds avoids a low kick by using good footwork. McCarthy goes for a double leg but Reynolds avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Reynolds continues to drive forward.
That's one minute gone in the round. Reynolds misses with a hook. McCarthy wants to counter the offense by Reynolds and move into the clinch position. McCarthy will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Jayne Reynolds has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Erik McCarthy. McCarthy closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. McCarthy tries to land a knee to the head but Reynolds blocks with his arms.
McCarthy tries to pull guard but Reynolds won't allow it.
Reynolds manages to break the clinch.
McCarthy misses with a head kick.
Reynolds throws a looping overhand right but McCarthy ducks down to avoid it. McCarthy drives through and clinches with Reynolds against the cage.
Reynolds escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Reynolds scores with a hook to the body. McCarthy takes a step back and tries to catch his breath. McCarthy has his takedown stuffed and Reynolds counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
It looks like Erik McCarthy has been cut. Reynolds lands a nice hook to McCarthy's body. McCarthy takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Reynolds leaves McCarthy with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. McCarthy looks winded! Reynolds scores with a nice head shot. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Reynolds cracks McCarthy with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd. Reynolds looks to land a left hand but McCarthy moved out of range nicely. McCarthy slips under a jab from Reynolds . Jayne Reynolds seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Reynolds will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Reynolds moves into the clinch. Reynolds is trying to maintain a safe position but McCarthy gets an underhook and turns Reynolds into the cage. Reynolds breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
That's three minutes gone in the round. McCarthy rushes Reynolds and presses him up against the cage. McCarthy successfully pulls guard.
Reynolds stopping the sweep attempt from McCarthy. Reynolds wants to stand but McCarthy has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Reynolds has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. McCarthy manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Reynolds displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from McCarthy. McCarthy is looking to clinch but Reynolds is avoiding it.
Reynolds scores with a one two! McCarthy had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes. McCarthy gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Reynolds . McCarthy is looking to clinch.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A jab from Reynolds misses. McCarthy is trying hard to land a takedown here. Reynolds sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! McCarthy shoots in looking for a takedown but Reynolds manages to keep the fight standing, pushing McCarthy's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Reynolds lands with an overhand left.
That has opened up Erik McCarthy's cut even more. Reynolds lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
A punch combination from Reynolds misses. McCarthy is looking for the big counter here. Reynolds throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
A jab from Reynolds misses. McCarthy shoots in and drives through. Reynolds sprawls well. Reynolds misses with a looping left. McCarthy steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Reynolds . Reynolds clinches. McCarthy is looking for a takedown. Reynolds pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jayne Reynolds dominated that round. The cut man is working on Erik McCarthy's cut. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
McCarthy misses with a head kick.
McCarthy dives in and grabs Reynolds 's left leg, looking for a takedown. Reynolds pushes down on McCarthy's head and hops out. McCarthy takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Sloppy strikes from Reynolds . Those never looked like landing. Reynolds looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio. Reynolds connects with a right hand. McCarthy shakes it off.
The cut above Erik McCarthy's eye is starting to cause him problems now. McCarthy shoots in and drives through. Reynolds sprawls well. Reynolds tries to counter with a takedown but McCarthy is quick to defend against it. McCarthy doesn't succeed with the takedown and Reynolds counters with a straight punch to the midsection. Jayne Reynolds has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Erik McCarthy. Reynolds cracks McCarthy with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage. McCarthy drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles. Nice uppercut there from Reynolds .
Erik McCarthy's cut is absolute horrible now. This looks like something out of a horror film with blood covering both fighters. McCarthy is breathing heavily. Reynolds throws an overhand right that lands on McCarthy's shoulder, as McCarthy tries to avoid the shot. Reynolds is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by McCarthy. Jayne Reynolds is winning the standup battle so far. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Reynolds lands with a hook. McCarthy tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
That's one minute gone in the round. Reynolds punishes McCarthy's body with a nice straight punch. Reynolds cracks McCarthy with a big right hand that sends him crashing to the floor. Reynolds has the opportunity to follow him to the ground but instead he's beckoning McCarthy to stand back up!
McCarthy is rocked!
The referee calls the doctor in to look at Erik McCarthy's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!
