PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Wiener Wacker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rick Flare (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Flare has chosen Also Sprach Zarathustra as his entrance music. Rick Flare is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Wiener Wacker!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 31 - 27 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Rick Flare!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Ben Watson and Chris Dean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wacker throws a predictable looking body shot
and Flare counters with a stiff right hand.
Wiener Wacker seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Flare drives through with a takedown into Wacker's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Flare preventing the sweep.
Flare is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

Wacker looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Flare in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Wacker working for a triangle but Flare defends it easily.
Flare working some strikes from top position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Flare trying to control the position from guard on top but Wacker is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Flare looking to sit in guard and control but Wacker gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Flare keeping moving, preventing Wacker from controlling successfully.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Flare is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Wacker is aware though and is defending well.
Flare is looking to stand up but Wacker isn't so interested in that idea.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Wacker controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Wacker wants to control from the top but Flare keeps moving.

Wacker is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Wacker stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Flare swivels though and keeps the full guard.
We've been hearing good reports from Wacker's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Flare has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Flare uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Wacker.
Wacker misses with a lunging right hand
letting Flare counter with a right hand.
Flare uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Wacker.

Flare throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Wacker was covering up waiting for the punch and Flare finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Wacker is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Flare defends well.
Wacker not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Wacker is looking for a triangle but Flare pushes his legs off easily.
Flare postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Wacker looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Flare loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Flare lands a couple of elbows.
Flare is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Wacker has his foot on Flare's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Flare works his way back into a safe position though.

Wacker is looking for a triangle but Flare pushes his legs off easily.

Flare got a little sloppy there for a moment and Wacker has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Flare has managed to get both his arms back between Wacker's legs - danger averted.

Flare avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Flare landing with the ground and pound.
Flare scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Flare chips away with some ground and pound.

Flare has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Wacker to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Flare is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Wacker pulls down on the head and he's put Flare to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Wiener Wacker!
